Themes for Spring 2012

Last weekend’s snowfall fast-forwarded me into a spring fashion daydream. Early reports on spring 2012 fashion trends include tribal themes, floral prints so bold that you can smell the roses, the roaring ‘20s, and minimalism. Do you feel like daydreaming? Let me give you a little taste of each look.

Tribal - I want to stroll the golden Savannas of Africa wearing these punches of saturated color. Swirls of vermillion, russet, and tangerine marching alongside moss green and copper stripes. Missoni, Bottega Veneta, and Hermes are showing gorgeous dresses inspired by artists from Africa and the Caribbean. Some of these pieces are works of art suitable for framing.

Florals - These ain't your Auntie May’s florals! Forget about Laura Ashley and the dainty prints from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Many new floral prints are bold digital images that recreate an entire greenhouse. Imagine giant zinnias and psychedelic bouquets of chrysanthemums marching up a minidress. Prada, Thakoon, and Christopher Kane will delight you with their eye catching motifs. We’re talking total color immersion--not for the faint of heart!

Roaring ‘20s - Jazz Age fever. Flapper-influenced styles were on the runway for spring. The style symbolizes the era when young women shimmied away from their parents’ and grandparents’ rigid expectations. Hemlines rose as inhibitions fell. Smoking and drinking became popular pastimes, “petting parties” were hot, and women won the right to vote. Look for designs from Etro, Gucci, and Oscar de la Renta to capture the mood.

Minimalism - It’s clean, serene. The focus is on the wearer, not the worn. You’ve got sleek, sophisticated silhouettes and a farewell to frou-frou. Are you a practical, sleek sister? Do you like muted colors and neutrals? Do you adore androgyny? If so, you’ll love the stylish wardrobe pieces from Chloe, Lanvin, and Marc Jacobs.

Reality check--we're two months away from spring. I'm staying curled up under a microfleece throw, but this fashionista's wish list is growing!

Never Can Say Good-Buy

Filene’s Basement is closing. For good. This week. Where’s my black armband and veil?

Today I wore a black leather Kenneth Cole car coat that I bought from Filene’s Basement in 1996. The coat is a classic double-breasted style with roomy pockets. It’s heavy with a silk Sunback lining. The leather is a bit distressed on the seams and around the buttonholes, and all the buttons have been replaced. The coat was relined was in 2006. It always gets compliments and is widely coveted by friends and strangers. I’m thinking about handcuffing it to myself whenever I wear it. Anyone who tries to steal it gets me as part of the deal.

Filene’s Basement was my playground. I always found the hottest labels (BCBG, Earl Jeans, Nicole Miller, Theory, Prada, Donna Karan) at prices that didn’t send me swooning to the ladies lounge. Filene’s Basement in Center City Philadelphia also featured a fur department--a little something for the wealthy who appreciate a bargain.

During a long-ago morning commute a big rusty smudge attached itself to my freshly dry-cleaned beige slacks. I had an important meeting that day, so it was Filene’s to the rescue. I dashed to the store that was three blocks from my office and bought a pair of dependable black pants. Filene’s motto should have been, “here I come to save the day,” but my buddy Mighty Mouse had a lock on it.

The end of an era came much too soon. I loved the stores in Washington DC, where I scored great stuff like silver star-studded Converse, a Vivienne Tam Mod-inspired black knit tunic, and a cute color block dress that screams for 60s-style go-go boots. I’ll always cherish the retail therapy sessions that Filene’s offered. A moment of silence, please.

Shooting Stars

These cute Anne Klein shoes remind me of shooting stars--those silver streaks that light up the black night sky and delight skygazers everywhere. They'll add sparkle and excitement to dark chilly evenings and brighten up abbreviated winter days. I want to wear them with everything, but if I don't respect this heel height I'll become a falling star!

I Am Not My Hair

The tribal love rock musical “Hair” is coming to Philadelphia in January. The lyrics of the title song fit this hair show post better than spandex on J. Lo’s hips. Here’s what composers James Rado and Gerome Ragni wrote in the mid-1960s:

“There ain’t no words for the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my….HAIR!! I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty, oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen, knotted, polka dotted, twisted, beaded, braided, powdered, flowered, confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!”

Dressing Ann

My friend Ann had two events to dress for--a dinner for Living Beyond Breast Cancer where she was being honored, and the Action AIDS 25th anniversary celebration. She didn’t have anything in her closet to WOW ‘em and needed to shop. She trusted me to glam her up for both events.

I found a gorgeous black taffeta cocktail dress and matching evening coat at The Wardrobe Boutique for the dinner. She felt sleek and composed in the ensemble and saw it as a canvas for eye-catching accessories. In the Boutique’s designer room I found a pair of fabulous black Ralph Lauren pumps with a 3” heel that pulled the look together perfectly.

The invitation for the Action AIDS 25th anniversary celebration recommended “festive attire” which could be anything from a simple magenta feather boa to a studded patent leather suit. Back at the Boutique I found two options--a 1970s Superfly-inspired zebra-striped maxi coat, and a beautiful black velvet cami with a matching jacket sporting a maribou feather collar. She chose the black velvet.

Remember when booties made you think of babies? Grandma usually crafted those tiny hand knit confections.

Today’s booties have grown up. The best booties are fierce and come in an amazing array of styles. They sport features like fold over cuffs, buckles, studs, and zippers. You can find them in a broad variety of materials and textures including suede, lace, satin, and leather. They’re available with crepe soles, peep toes, platforms, wedges, and stacked heels high enough to cause a nosebleed. Most common are the numbers with stiletto heels that could impale a Frankenwolf monster with ease.

Today’s booties are sexy! They show off shapely, well-toned calves while keeping your tootsies warm. Just make sure that you’ve got colorful tights to pull the look together, or pair them with your favorite jeans.

I got two pairs of booties this season that you’ve gotta see! My go-to booties are a sleek black pair from Sofft with a sassy button-adorned cuff and an incredibly comfortable inner structure. They make everything look fresh and gives an edgy time stamp to the classics. The sumptuous brown suede bootie is from Naturalizer and features an adorable lace-up side detail. Sock It To Me

I hate having cold feet so socks are a MUST for fall and winter. Knee socks are best--I need to be as toasty as possible. Cold feet make me crankier than usual, so gimme my foot mittens!

I love making colorful statements by wearing socks festooned with flying pigs, contented cows, fluffy clouds, giraffes, letters of the alphabet, stripes of every width and color, paw prints, baby chicks wearing glasses, and the see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil primates.

The best foot warmers are at Target. Not only do they hold their own against raggedy toe nails (don‘t act like you‘ve never had them), the elastic remains snug after repeated washings so the socks don’t run down into my shoes. You can get Target socks with spots, colors, patterns, and seasonal themes (think about a Valentine Day game of strip poker featuring their heart-adorned socks). You’ll find bargain-priced boot socks to tuck into motorcycle boots, and over-the-knee socks to peek out from the tops of knee high boots.

So, drop into Target and stock up on some toasted-marshmallow, fresh-out-of-the-oven, steamy-bath warmth. Down with popsicle toes!

High Style, Low Costs

I read recently that the average American spends about $1,700 a year on clothing. Isn’t that kinda low? I know people who spend that in one day! All it takes is one pair of $500 pointy toe boots and a cashmere coat and you’re done. But wait...don't women spend more on clothes than men? And do you spend more if you're searching for a mate?

Contrary to the rumors out there, I do have a clothing budget. I’m a pretty savvy shopper and I rely on my knowledge of clothing construction, fit, and quality to keep me looking sharp and stylish on a budget.

The Diva Diaries--What Did She Wear?

As Casual Friday followers know, I love getting dressed for work. I cherish these Barbie moments, and see them as a fabulous means of self-expression. Here's my narrative for the work week ending November 4th.

Monday, October 31
Thirty-seven degrees at 7:00 AM on Halloween--BRRRRR! I’m bundling up in a pair of dark chocolate J. Crew boot cut corduroy jeans, and layers which include a lightweight J. Crew cream-colored ruffled Henley shirt, and a cuddly oatmeal cashmere cardi from the late, lamented Center City Loehmann’s. My top layer is a figure flattering pale caramel herringbone wool blazer from the gratis clothing collection curated from The Career Wardrobe. (The jacket was destined for the Salvation Army because it was donated off season, and the off season inventory room was packed tighter than a Tokyo subway.) I’ll tie a cherry red cashmere scarf around my neck and pull on a pair of brown leather gloves to block the frosty air. I’m bottoming off the outfit with caramel colored suede and leather Van Eli urban cowgirl boots. Hey now!!

Tuesday, November 1
Another chilly autumn morning--46 degrees--but less shocking than yesterday’s 36 degrees. My indoor layers will be lighter today, so I’ll need my beloved black leather Kenneth Cole car coat for the commute. I bought it in 1997 and it’s heavy, warm, always appropriate. I’m planning to wear a fitted Boden seal gray felted wool jacket with cabernet velvet trim under it. Under the jacket there’ll be a sunflower yellow long sleeve J. Crew tee that will brighten my skin tone and mood! I’ll pull on a pair of Max Studio slate gray jersey flare leg pants for effortless Charlie Girl chic, and a pair of Van Eli black kitten heel ankle boots. I’ll top it all off with a gorgeous silver, burgundy, and black knit scarf from Ten Thousand Villages which reminds me of rose petals strung together.

Wednesday, November 2
Another chilly morning with a promise of warmer afternoon temperatures. I’m attending a dinner event this evening but don’t want to be exceedingly daring during the day. So, I’m pulling out a dark red knit INC jacket with a power ruffle down the front. Got it last year at Macy’s, and wore it for my January appearance on the NBC10 Good News program. It’s one hellvua conversation starter and the top layer over a close fitted long sleeve gray/red/black rock chick t-shirt, and a black mid-calf pencil skirt that I bought in Montreal a couple of years before Mad Men. Sofft high heel black booties will make their debut today. I’ll wear the lovely silver, burgundy, and black scarf at my neck again; it seems to complement my entire autumn palette. You know, as much as I dread the fall-to-winter transition, I’m weathering it well this year thanks to a delicious collection of chic jackets and soft, cozy sweaters curated from my fave resale shops during the past year.

Thursday, November 3
Forty-six degrees this morning. Attending a conference today--I’m in businesswoman mode. Completely grayed out in a sexy Max Studio tweed trench style jacket with a self-belt and ¾ sleeves over a Calvin Klein v-neck sweater dress with a fitted bodice and flare skirt. Both items were purchased from the Center City Loehmann’s. Today’s accessories include gray sweater tights, a gorgeous bronze ceramic bead necklace from Ten Thousand Villages, and the ever-present red cashmere scarf. I’m carrying a pair of fierce black booties to slip into when I get to the venue--I’ll be commuting in flats. Oddly enough I’m not wearing a single item from a resale shop today! Does this mean that I’m a little less myself??

Friday, November 4
Casual Friday. I LOVE Fridays! I LOVE denim! Denim in the workplace can be totally appropriate if you put some thought into it. Think twice before putting on sweatshirts, track suits (even if your sneakers match), t-shirts with the words "state property" slapped across the back, and acid wash jeans.

Today I’m wearing a denim maxiskirt with a front pleat and flared hem that I bought at Daffy’s before their inventory took an unfortunate turn for the cheap and cheesy. Underneath I’m sporting black and white paisley tights and Sudini walkable black knee high boots. On top I’m wearing a dark gray J. Crew long sleeved tee with a skinny pewter belt from the LL Bean Signature collection. Keeping warm in a black hand knit cardi that I got at a resale shop in South Philly. What makes this cardi special are the rows of “poodle loops” at the cuffs, across the shoulders, and at the hem. Reversible J. Crew two-toned gray cashmere scarf at the neck. Big Red handbag carried the daily supplies. Happy Friday!

Pass the Peas

The peacoat is as much of a fall classic as back-to-school, pumpkin carving, and putting up with opinionated drunken in-laws at Thanksgiving. Also known as the “Jackie O” coat, it is timeless. I scored this luscious chocolate brown classic at last year’s end-of-season outerwear sale at The Wardrobe Boutique. It’s a plush wool/cashmere blend, and goes with most of my fall/winter pieces.

This jacket reminds me of the days when I explored the world as a curious twenty-something woman. My black pea coat accompanied and protected me everywhere I went—to work, on dates, running errands, hanging out with other underemployed friends. I wore it until the lining was in shreds. Needless to say, I’m delighted to have another pea coat and can’t wait to snuggle into it!

Au Revoir, Mon Amie

It was an outrageous find—a black pleated wool crepe Chanel skirt. Gold plated buttons with the trademark interlocking “Cs.” Originally sold at Nan Duskin, the legendary women’s clothing store on Rittenhouse Square that specialized in the exceptional, exclusive, and expensive. I was dazed and amazed to find it while browsing through my neighborhood Village Thrift Store a few years ago. I immediately yanked it off the rack and tucked it under my arm.

Can you imagine? Chanel—the epitome of aspirational brands—at Village Thrift! French chic, classic lines, sophistication. Rich fabrics and construction that justify the lofty price tags, here in my scruffy little ‘hood, with a $5 price tag! Be still my heart! I tried on the skirt in the store over my jeans; it fit well enough to buy.

The skirt was flattering and added an extra swish to my walk. It looked great with silky blouses, cute little sweaters, and fitted jackets. Worn effortlessly from day into evening with a simple accessory swap. I got tons of compliments wearing that skirt, and I always enjoyed sharing where I found it and what I paid for it. I don’t know how many people I converted to thrifting, but that purchase certainly cemented my deep and abiding relationship with consignment, resale, and thrift stores.

It was recently attacked by a group of hungry moths that left it looking like Bonnie and Clyde’s sedan after the shootout. As a result, it will be going to that big cedar closet in the sky. Au revoir, mon amie, and many thanks for the brush with the inimitable Coco.

Let’s Hear it for the Boys

In the 1980s I curated a collection of men’s white tuxedo shirts from thrift stores that I wore tucked into everything. Men’s white Hanes tees were a staple of my casual wardrobe. I was thrilled when I learned to tie a tie. I wore tweedy men’s jackets and topcoats, including an oversized black tuxedo jacket that reminds me of Ricky Ricardo, and a beloved brown wool tweed 1950s-era coat with leather buttons. So, imagine my unadulterated delight with one of this fall’s hottest trends, borrowing from the boys.

Menswear. The Dandy Look. Think of Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Annie Hall, Jonelle Monae. Remember how fabulous Julie Andrews looked at dinner with James Garner in Victor/Victoria wearing a tuxedo with white tie and vest, cuff links, and boutonnière? How about when she donned a charcoal pinstriped suit with a white dress shirt and orange paisley tie? Incredible, indelible style images.

This look capitalizes on floppy bowties, slim or flowy trousers, silky shirts, vests, and oxford style shoes or loafers. Raid your man’s closet if he’s got an item that you covet. Consider tailored pantsuits paired with feminine accessories, or items in traditional tweeds, pinstripes, or plaids.

Wearing clothes cut for a man requires a shift in perspective and lots of attention to proportion. It’s a good idea to have a tailor handy if you’re planning to shop in the men’s department. The boy’s department may be a better option if you’re slim. Try out several different pieces to find what works best for you. Start slow--layer a tweed vest over a white button down shirt, or just slip into a pair of Bass loafers.

So, dive in, and keep it girly with a slick of bright red lipstick. You'll be the talk of the water cooler!

Happy Birthday To You

My Mother and Me

Today would have been my mother's 87th birthday. I last wrote about her on my birthday in April, but there was more to say...so here's another tribute to this fabulous woman.

I learned about the timeless beauty of blackness and black culture from her. Because of her I heard the poetry of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and learned the lyrics to the black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.” She and I were frequent and enthusiastic patrons of the historic Howard Theater in Washington DC, and were riveted by the electrifying live performances of James Brown, Little Richard, The Temptations, and many, many others on that stage.

Because of her love of music our house brimmed with the musical power and sass of Ruth Brown, BB King, Billy Preston, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington. Our Sunday morning soundtrack often featured Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Edwin Hawkins Singers, Aretha’s “Amazing Grace.” Gray days brought Jimmy Reed into the mix. Our stereo often blew the roof off the sucker; she predated Spinal Tap by “turning it up to 11.”

She loved to laugh and from that I learned that there is joy to be found everywhere. She was an easy giggle and one of my favorite audiences. She laughed as hard as I did at the antics of Bugs, Daffy, Wile E. Coyote, and Tom & Jerry. She adored the silliness of The Three Stooges and Benny Hill.

She was an old school romantic who loved vampires (especially Barnabas Collins), Wuthering Heights, and sentimental greeting cards.

She made personal fashion statements. Made herself a leopard print corduroy pantsuit and wore it proudly at a time when most women were still wearing demure shirtwaist dresses for day. She entertained in bold print jumpsuits. Made dashikis for her husband. Outfitted me in t-shirt dresses and Mexican style-tiered skirts. Stitched up dotted swiss dresses with Peter Pan collars and back ties, and sweet little pastel dresses to squelch the blue jean-clad hippie chick that was growing in front of her.

She taught me how to walk in heels; how to stand and sit. She taught me courtesy and decorum. Most importantly she taught me to be proud, make waves, and always show some spine.

I miss her, and am grateful for her lessons. She taught me never to be ashamed of the little black girl that I was, and I know that she would beam with pride at the woman that I've become. Happy birthday, Mom!

Cover Your Tracks

“Now arriving on Track 1, Section B is the scheduled 6:27 express to…” I hear that announcement whenever I’m standing behind a sista with exposed weave tracks. Casual Friday followers know that I’m anti-weave so today’s post should not be a shocker.

Sistas! If you choose the weave PLEASE check your entire head before leaving the house. Right after you apply the Pretty Girl cosmetics and run your tongue over your teeth to remove lipstick smudges, grab a hand mirror, hold it to the back of your head, and turn your back to the door of the medicine chest. Shine a really bright light on to your head and fix the problem areas. I shouldn't see where your hair and weave meet. And, please make sure that I can’t see your natural naps ‘cause believe me, if the two hair textures are not a good match, there’s just no way that’s gonna look anything but mangy and nasty.

The mess on your head is distracting. I can't help but stare at you--for the wrong reasons. And yes, your "oh, no she didn't" weave will become dinner conversation.

The "It" Bag

Pretty psychedelic, huh? This grandma-on-acid vintage bag is not the latest Prada, Dooney & Bourke, or Louis Vuitton. This bag has no pedigree, but it has plenty of attitude. The outside feels like an old school chenille bedspread; the inside is lined with a heavy navy blue taffetta that is remarkably still intact.

I nabbed this at The Wardrobe Boutique. This is my "It" bag for fall. Love it!!

Loafing Around

Remember back to school time? If you weren’t outfitted with a pair of brand new saddle shoes with eraser colored soles you probably had a pair of penny loafers. Didja have a shiny copper penny (or for the big spenders, a nickel) inserted into the coin slot? Yeah, me too. Well, now you can relive those days with this season’s hottest shoe, the chunky heeled loafer.

A perennial preppy favorite, you can find these kicks at any price point. Makers include Nine West, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Burberry, True Religion, Chinese Laundry, Gabrielle Rocha, and Boutique 9.

Wear them with to work a suit for extra attitude, and pair them with your favorite jeans on the weekends. You may not be able to jump double dutch in them, but you’ll double your cool fashionista points.

Carmen Jones

Harry and Dorothy

Back in the day, movies about regular folk had style and elements of glamour. The stylish 1954 Otto Preminger film Carmen Jones inspired me with an all-black cast led by the fabulously talented and gorgeous Dorothy Dandridge and the still smokin’ Harry Belafonte.

Carmen Jones is a sexy, tragic love story where the lead character seduces, abuses, and subsequently drives a naïve young army pilot mad. Years earlier, Oscar Hammerstein, Jr. had taken Georges Bizet’s Carmen, switched the story's focus from 19th century Spaniards to World War II blacks, and the locale to a Southern military base.

As Carmen Jones, Ms. Dandridge is as sultry as a mid-August day. She struts, flaunting and taunting, heating up the screen while she flirts shamelessly with her prey and her film audience. Ms. Dandridge is rarely mentioned as a style icon; other black stars such as Diana Ross or Lena Horne are usually cited. But, as this film shows, she absolutely had the stuff.

The Blushing Cow

Red is smokin’ hot for fall. It’s the color of passion, and whether is it cerise, flame, cardinal, ruby, or cranberry it is an attention getter. So stoke the fire this fall and stand out from the crowd with a red topper! I’ll be wearing a fabulous red leather coat from The Wardrobe Boutique that feels like it soaked in a milk and honey bath for a week. This tomato red will stand out in a sea of urban black biker jackets this fall and look great with everything!

So, my lovelies, pick up a pair of radish red suede flats, a burgundy blazer, or a crimson pencil skirt. Grab some scarlet lip color and dip into some of that Bettie Page glamour. Bust out of that shy and retiring box and get your plumage on!

Off The Cuff

An alternative to the jingly-jangly charm bracelets and clickety-clackety of beaded bangles is the cuff. Big. Bold. Bodacious. Legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland was known to wear one on each wrist. Wonder Woman deflected bullets with her cuffs.

Feel like an empress and personalize your look with these statement bracelets. You can find them sculpted, bejeweled, or studded at jewelry retailers everywhere including Ten Thousand Villages, Saks Fifth Avenue, Evesaddiction.com, or Shimmerandstones.com. You can also find gorgeous tooled leather cuffs that scream hippie chic at Etsy.com.

My favorite is the Tiffany’s “LOVE” cuff that was inspired by one of their 1970s designs (pictured at right). At $15,000 for the 18K gold piece, it’s absolutely unaffordable for this fashionista but as Debbie Harry once sang, “dreaming is free.”

Got flashed today. Not by a creepy old dude in a wrinkled trench coat, but by a middle-aged woman wearing a micro romper and minimal underwear. She was lowering herself onto a blanket laid out on the grass at an outdoor concert and belly flopped down within a few yards of me with her butt sticking up in the air. The romper didn’t cover her ample bottom so I saw way too much flesh, including those creases that the sun never reaches. It was as if she was sending an invitation.

Here’s another style tip for summer--make sure that your street clothing offers enough rear coverage so that your booty isn’t served up to others. If you want to beat the heat at an outdoor event, nothing beats a lightweight skirt or a pair of cropped cargo pants. Knee length shorts are also hot, paired with a sweet graphic tee or a cool camisole.

Don’t be a bad example; you don’t want someone like me writing about you!

Another Wardrobe Boutique find! This shoe added 4” to my height in about 30 seconds. I always wanted to be tall, and believe that 5’9” would have been my perfect height. My long narrow feet were made to carry a giraffe-like frame, and at 5'5" I’ll take any height enhancement that I can get.

These delightfully trendy wedges from one of my favorite shoemakers, Franco Sarto, are tricky to walk in but hot, hot, hot! This gorgeous British Tan goes with every single summer item in my closet. I’m cultivating a slow, graceful walk so I won’t go clomping along the city streets, but I have the rest of the summer to get it right. I’m wearing them with flowy longer dresses and occasionally with jeans to work the city girl strut.

Kill the Khakis! (Some Summer Style Tips)

We need some new rules for summer Fridays at the office. Dressing down from Memorial Day to Labor Day has come to mean tossing on a pair of tired frayed khakis and heading out the door. Instead of tossing them on, toss them out! The office fashionista has other options like a cute white denim pencil skirt paired with a cool slim fitting tee or button down. She could also slip into a sleek sleeveless belted sheath dress with a pair of cute flat sandals in a hot color.

Cropped pants are always appropriate. Today’s model features a narrower leg than that of a couple of years ago, and they lend a sophisticated, tailored tone to business casual. Wedges, pointy toe flats, espadrilles, or fabulous platform pumps all rock the crops.

Grab a fitted vest and pop it over a longer fitted t-shirt in a contrasting color. Add a funky beaded necklace. Wear with the pencil skirt, cropped pants, or sleek dark wash jeans.

Speaking of jeans, relegate those faded, torn jeans to clean-the-garage garb. Don’t you dare wear them to work! Invest in a pair of well-fitted (but not skin tight) dark wash jeans. Skinny or boot cut doesn’t matter, both are current. Pair them with silky, flowy tops tucked into your waistband. And, always wear a belt! They serve two purposes, to keep your pants up and pull together your look. Just forget about that ancient rule about shoes and belts matching; work the personal style!

Most important--wear color! We swaddle ourselves in gray and black during the colder months. Summer is the time to bust out in a rainbow of red, yellow, aqua, and green. Choose a lime green bag to wear with your coral dress. Drape an orange scarf over the royal blue tee. Choose a bold print over a dainty one. You'll look gorgeous!

Don’t Tell Me Your Secrets

Ladies, ladies, ladies! It’s hot. The air is thick and spongey. Extra layers can be uncomfortable, but it’s kinda important to wear underwear during the summer. Manage your assets! Stop the spillage, slippage, and seepage!

We all love strapless—it’s sexy and cool—but make sure that the ta-tas aren’t too-too. If the top of your dress barely contains your gifts, consider buying the next size up or make an adorable fitted lace cami or funky racerback tank your first layer.

Strapless bras don’t have to be those uncomfortable bandeaus that flatten your figure into a uniboob. Strapless bras that lift and flatter, add or subtract, can be found everywhere at every price point.

If your dress is white or sheer make sure that the color of your undies match your flesh. How many times have I seen fuchsia panties under a white dress? Eliminate panty lines with a pair of cute boy shorts. Trust me, they are way more comfortable than fanny floss, and also work well under a slinky knit dress.

Look sleek, not sloppy, in the sizzling heat. Keep your cool by wearing the right pieces.

Small busted women unite! It’s time to start a movement to pay only for what we use. Everyone knows that the price of a good undergarment has jumped higher than a grasshopper on fire. Bras that are comfy, cradle and lift the girls to a sexy silhouette often start at $40, but I don’t want to spend $66 for the Natori push up bra, $55-58 for Victoria’s Secret BioFit, or $42 for a strapless Calvin Klein. Why should I pay more when I’m carrying less?

Don’t misunderstand--I prefer having toddler girls, not teenagers. They won’t head as far south. They’re not ham-sized. They’re not basketballs. When I run for the bus the bounce is modest. They don’t sway erratically when I’m dancing. They fill out my sweaters and look downright plump in a slim fitting t-shirt. But shouldn’t my bra be cheaper than Wendy Williams’s or Lil‘ Kim‘s? And yes, I believe that I should get a discount because I’m not a 36D. It’s the green thing to do! I’m using less fabric, so the seamstress will spend less time on my bra, using less energy and reducing the maker's carbon footprint. Right?

I recently discovered the comfort and lower prices of the Gap and Target bras. They've got color, lace, bows, buttons, and push-up profiles just like the expensive brands. If you are of more modest proportions, check them out--you won't be disappointed!

Wow! Has it really been 50 years? Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s entranced us and canonized the LBD as the ultimate in sophistication and glamour. Ms. Hepburn’s absolutely divine Givenchy wardrobe has been an inspiration to many fashionistas.

Who hasn’t gotten an instant shot of glam from oversized black sunglasses, a sun blocking statement hat, kitten heels, or layers of pearls? With this stuff in your closet, do you really need anything else?

The NY Times recently reported that five of Coach’s classic bags (including the duffel, which was discontinued in 1997) are being reintroduced on June 15. Net-a-Porter sells super-pricey bags from Mulberry, Alexander Wang, and Proenza Schouler among others, but compared to those four-figure pricetags, shelling out for a classic Coach isn't so painful.

They Say It's My Birthday!

Today is my birthday and I’d like to start the celebrations with a thank you to the woman who made it all possible—my fabulous mother. Besides the heaping helpings of love, attention and good southern food that she gave me, she instilled in me a love of fashion and a strong sense of self.

My mom made her own fashion statements. She was a gorgeous woman with great style who taught me a lot about clothes, especially how to choose and wear flattering items. I thought she was a glamorous as Lena Horne or Eartha Kitt. She wore velvet coats in the 1940s, sumptuous suede jackets in the 1950s, miniskirts in the 1960s, and outrageous jumpsuits in the 1970s.

She was my style icon—no one else comes close. She had class, soul, and attitude. Here is a photo of her from the late 1940s when she was in her early 20s. Love you, Mom!

Those Were The Days

The 1970s—the decade that keeps repeating itself like a bad burrito. Saturday night disco fever, bodacious bad-ass blaxploitation heroes and she-roes, and hippie trippy muses have no doubt influenced this season’s fashions. Look around at the racks of bell bottom pants, flowy maxi dresses, asymmetrical hems, and shelves of platform shoes in your favorite boutique before you tell me that you don’t hear Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bell” playing in your head. Tie dye, hot pants, spandex, glitter—it’s still here!

…And the Right To Bare Arms

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours! No, seriously, why are you afraid to let me see them? Tattoo regret? Third eye growing out of the forearm?

I’ve had enough of women hating their arms and staying covered even during the steamy summer months. Arms have been incredibly useful throughout our evolution. They connect our hearts to our hands. We use them to carry overflowing laundry baskets, cradle infants, lift grocery bags, caress lovers. Our arms are symbols of our strength yet we treat them like naughty stepchildren. We hide them, bind them. I recently heard about arm “girdles” and had to wonder about the wearers’ levels of vanity or insanity.

There is advice everywhere for women who want to hide their arms. I hear women engaged in arm-bashing. “Oh, I don’t wear sleeveless dresses any more,” seems to be a more common refrain for women over 30. We need to adopt the men in Speedos’ devil-may-care attitude and let it hang, droop, and jiggle. Jiggly arms are not important, and worrying about them keeps us from reaching true fabulousness.

Dancing your booty off at a wedding could mean removing your camouflage cardigan. And guess what--your arms will be on display. But check this out, nobody is gonna be looking at them. They’ll be looking at your ecstatic smile as you lose your inhibitions to the groove line. Will you keep the sun from smiling on your arms while playing beach volleyball? When you’re gardening? Toddlers won't care if your arms are toned or flabby as long as you give them frequent snuggles and kisses.

If you really want to change the shape of your arms, I can recommend some exercises. But if you want to engage in more self-love, raise your hand. Notice that your arm is attached.

You Were Born This Way, So Work It!

Look fab every single day! My philosophy is that life is too short to be a frump. We have a limited number of years on the planet and a fleeting amount of time to be glam. Be a sexy, daring head turner now! When you’re 97 no one is gonna care, but if you’re 27, 37 even 57 you want to look good--everyday.

There are two keys to this concept: accept and love the skin that you’re in, and dress to show off your best parts. And, yes, you do have best parts. Here are some tips will take you a long way into the fierce zone.

Dress for the body that you’re in NOW. You were born with a basic body type (hourglass, triangle, inverted triangle, diamond, and rectangle--more on this to follow), and you’ve got to celebrate and adorn it. You can change your hair color, change your eye color, get lipo, but your basic body type doesn’t change!

Buy clothes that make you feel like a rock star. You know, that outfit or article of clothing that makes you feel sexy, smart, and confident every time you put it on. Buy things that always make you feel that way!

Consider your lifestyle when making clothing choices. Every diva does different things and your clothing choices should reflect that. You probably don’t need a closet full of business attire if you’re a personal trainer.

Buy clothes that are a good investment; buy the best quality you can afford.

Step away from the “final sale” racks! Those 90% markdowns hanging limply in a back corner at Macy’s are there for a reason--bad designs, outdated styles, uncomfortable fabrics, hideous colors…stop me if I‘m wrong.

You can wear anything you want as long as it is proportioned to your body. If it isn’t, get a good tailor or buddy up to a seamstress.

Ever wonder about your body type and how to play up your best features? Keep reading--by the end of this post you’ll have the info you need to look simply amazing.

Hourglass - perfectly proportioned as defined by the shoulder to hip ratio, with a well-defined waist. However, no two hourglass figures are alike. One could have a longer torso, a higher bustline, or a larger bust size. If you’re an hourglass you want to show it off, but be sure that you don’t cut yourself in half with belts. Proportion and balance are important for your frame. You can look stunning in tailored pieces such as a fitted blazer with an A-line or pencil skirt.

Triangle - also known as the pear shape. Upper body smaller than the bottom. You can balance your figure by adding volume on top. Think about a blouse with ruffles at the neck. Add bold eye catching jewelry, or an ethnic print scarf. (Just don’t do it all at once.) And don’t shy away from skinny jeans! Just pop on a gorgeous flowy tunic in a favorite print or color to reach your fabulousness.

Inverted Triangle - has wider shoulders, more ample bust, slimmer on bottom than on top. Your friends probably envy your shoulder line and sexy cleavage. Consider a little more volume on the bottom. Patterns, light and bright colors on the bottom are also cool. Rock a hot pink pleated skirt, or one in a zebra print.

Diamond - may also be known as the apple shape. A rounded figure with a fuller bust and mid-section--usually has great legs! First thing you want to do is show off those limbs, so raise your skirt hem to the knee and buy some sexy heels. If you want to look taller and slimmer, look for a monochromatic color scheme. If you want to draw attention away from your belly, look for blouses and jackets that fall below it.

Rectangle - not as curvy, has a somewhat boyish shape. Stock up on belts; you’re gonna look great in them! You can also wear those sweet little form fitting jackets with details at the middle. Check out wrap tops that tie at the waist; empire waists are also good bets. Drawstring pants can also create volume at the hips, capris will show skin.

It's easy to be glamorous once you accept that you're already pretty. I hope that I've pushed you in that direction! So, get busy and start working it!

I’m honored to be a volunteer at The Career Wardrobe and The Wardrobe Boutique. I’m gaining so much from my experience. Talking and learning from Wardrobe clients, helping the women to get a fresh start with a fresh wardrobe. Hearing their plans to improve their lives as they re-enter the workplace.

What’s Your Favorite Color, Baby?

On a recent surf through the local HDTV channels I saw something that I hadn’t seen in ages--a color bar test pattern! The color bar is a perfect illustration for one of the season’s hottest fashion trends.

Those of you who are just coming out of winter’s gray hibernation were probably shocked awake by explosions of saturated color. Pulsating rainbows of tropical colors and shrieking neons will keep you trippin’ all summer long. Designers have gone Crayola crazy. The best examples include Diane Von Furstenberg dresses and accessories, and Raf Simon for Jil Sander (see pic).

Double Bubble pink, royal wedding purple, chilly cobalt blue, emerald isle green, overripe tomato red, and school bus yellow are all waiting to jump into your closets. Here’s what cool--color looks great on everybody, you just have to know how to wear it. Stay away from head-to-toe monochromatic looks. You don’t want to look like Big Bird, or even worse, Barney. Brights look best when worn with solid neutrals. Think about a slinky slate gray silk sheath dress under a fitted tangerine jacket. Maybe a cloud white shirt with a teal skirt.

Fit and quality are also critical when you’re wearing color. Color makes cut-rate fabrics look even cheaper, especially prints. Poor quality color items can fade or run in one washing. Ill-fitting color garments look even tackier.

If you’re not ready to dive headlong into the multi-hued pool yet, you can add small doses of color to your wardrobe. Think about adding an orange patent leather tote, a pair of lemon yellow Wayfarers, or a pair of turquoise wedge sandals. Make your world a brighter place!

We’re Going to the Nudies

The hottest color in footwear this spring is “nude.” Platform pumps, wedges, and ballet flats can be found in soft shades of blush, ecru, peach and tan. YSL, Jimmy Choo, Steve Madden, Vaneli, and Miu Miu among others have added these muted colors to their shoe design palette. Flesh tones are your best bet for versatility, and a gorgeous pair of dusty pink slingbacks would be the perfect compliment for hot shades like kozmic blue, chocolate city brown, stop-in-the-name-of-love red, and fireball orange. "Nude" also flatters neutrals such as like-a-virgin white, oyster gray, and inky shadows black.

However, in my online searches, “nude” usually doesn’t translate into my skin tone. I would love to find a pair of platform pumps that match my golden brown color. Where are the sexy ebony, café au lait, mahogany, warm cocoa, or almond colored shoes that reflect the shades of many of world’s women? I found a pair of Steve Madden caramel colored patent peep toes that are close to my shade, but where is the wide selection of “nudes” for the Roshumbas, Juanitas, LaToyas, and Khadijahs? Our feet are flesh colored too, but again, it all depends on who defines the standard.

When you're looking for "nude" kitten heels or gladiator sandals, will you be able to find your skin?

Handbags (no Gladrags)

I have three cherished vintage handbags that belonged to my mom. One dates from the late 1950s, one from the pre-mod 1960s, and the other from the superfly 1970s.

The 1950s and 60s bags are ladylike and proper with these imagined contents: embroidered white hanky, a tube of Revlon’s Cherries in the Snow lipstick, big black sunglasses that made her a mysterious glamour girl, a small hair brush and a compact.

I always thought of the leopard bag (pictured) as her Jackie bag. She had a sassy little leopard pillbox hat that she often wore with it as part of a “special occasion” outfit. You know, an adult dinner out, maybe a cocktail party. Other accessories may have included a fox fur stole and a chunky charm bracelet with a jade heart or glass-encased four-leaf clover dangling from the links.

I coveted the 1970s shoulder bag for years. She bought it in Vineland, NJ shortly after moving there in 1972. It was the style of the time—hippie, unlined, tooled heavy leather with leather laces that attached the shoulder strap to the bag. She carried this bag constantly for almost a decade and I always teased her about borrowing it. That bag reminds me of her essence—bold, sometimes outrageous, unafraid, and proud. The imagined contents of this bag would be an Afro pick and car keys, in addition to the oversized black sunglasses, neutral colored lipstick, and embroidered hanky. In her new role as a suburban housewife she also carried shopping lists as well as outgoing and incoming mail retrieved from their post office box.

I haven’t used any of these handbags, but I can’t part with them. They’re history and they’re style from my mother, my muse.

Spring 2011--Shop Your Closet

Yippee!! Spring rebirth and rejuvenation are just around the corner, but the fashion theme this year seems to be--wear what you wore last year…and the year before that….

I leafed through pages and pages of fashion blogs and magazines, reading the breathless editorials listing everything a woman needs to be on trend this summer. Problem is, although I liked the trends, I saw very little that was new or fresh.

My perennial favorites were trotted out (maxi dresses, utilitarian chic, denim, white shirts, ethnic prints), and some traditions have been tweaked, such as the “new” high-rise jean (with waists reaching the belly button) from labels such as Derek Lam and Citizens of Humanity. Seventies-style bell bottom pants that will recall Lauren Hutton’s long-legged stride, Bianca Jagger’s smoldering glow or Pam Grier’s high kicks are also hot, as is the preppy cardi, and animal prints.

For the trendier reader the newest look in skirts is the “tail hem.” According to Fashioning.com tail hems, “…fill the void between mini and midi and midi and maxi.” Basically it’s a asymmetrical hem with the back being longer than the front. Think of a shirttail hem and you’ve got the picture. Is it booty-flattering? The jury is still out on this one. But before you slap your plastic on the counter, check out tail hem designs from Etro, Dennis Basso, or Topshop Unique. The longer styles are probably easier to wear than the minis.

Accessories for the season include 70s-style sky high clogs, sophisticated kitten heels, and glam cat eye sunglasses. Do you see what I mean about the season of nothing new? So, steam the wrinkles out of your lovely 2009 and 2010 togs, and freshen up your look with a sexy new pair of wedgies or adorable and comfy ballet flats.

Better yet, bypass the trends and create your own timeless look. Make Keds classic canvas sneakers your go-to shoe for fleet footed comfort. They come in great colors and look sleek with skinny jeans, leggings, or slim fitting capris. Wrap your pretty head with an African print fabric. Wear a sari to an evening event. Brighten your Colgate smile with a femme fatale red lipstick--and make that color your signature.

My best advice--wear vintage!

Hat Trick

I'm addicted to old movies. Love the melodrama, the larger-than-life personalities, the fabulous fashions. I adore glamor on the silver screen as conceived by early to mid-20th century design luminaries such as Edith Head, Orry-Kelly, and Adrian.

The appropriately-named golden age of cinema shows us an era in which men (and women) always wore hats in public. Hats were standard items of clothing for rich and poor, and whether you were a gangster, reporter, preacher, or bookie, you never left home without le chapeau.

Some blame the demise of men's hats on JFK, who was topless at his 1961 inauguration. Trendspotters, however, have noticed a slow return to hats as style statements for men. Chalk it up to the Mad Men influence on contemporary fashion, but I've gotta admit, a man in a fedora can be pretty damn sexy. A cockeyed oversized baseball cap just doesn't compare.

When I first walked into The Wardrobe Boutique I was ready to surrender my debit card. Leave it on the counter. Go ahead, take the money, I’ll sign for whatever. Here’s where the frugal Philly fashionista can score some of the best deals in town. There’s a fun vintage rack featuring items from the 1970s and 1980s. You can find all kinds of accessories--everything from ballet flats to platform boots, ladylike clutch purses to bold psychedelic print totes, funky jewelry, and miles and miles of cute belts.

A bounty of goodies is added to the inventory daily, so you really need to stop in a couple of times a week. Bring your best friend on Tuesday, the one who’ll urge you to buy the white leather jacket, and bring your co-worker on Friday. You know, the one who needs to move her business wardrobe away from the black pants and a top habit.

This is the transformative power of clothing, and The Career Wardrobe offers a booster shot of this power everyday to low-income women re-entering the workplace. Gently used, contemporary suits donated by local business women get a new life there.

I’m a new volunteer at The Career Wardrobe and I’m constantly struck by their commitment to empowering women to succeed in the workplace. It's a place where women bond, encourage and help each other. Terms of endearment between clients and Wardrobe stylists fly through the air as hangars clatter and piles of suits, blouses, and shoes fill the dressing rooms. The scene is a spontaneous fashion show, smiles widening amid cries of “Girl, you are working that suit!” Hugs are given freely.

I love helping someone choose stylish business attire--helping them to create a new self that glows with confidence and pride. Many clients haven’t dressed up in years and are surprised to see how great they look. I have the pleasure of helping them select the Ann Taylor or Tahari suit, the hot pink silk blouse, the Bandolino pumps. I cheer when they strike a pose in the mirror. Offer encouragement when they feel unsure about their selection, advise on skirt length, debate pant suit versus skirt suit. Push them to add a little nontraditional jewelry.

In the end, she walks out the door taller than when she came in. The jukebox in her head is playing Prince’s “Baby I’m A Star,” or maybe Patti Labelle’s “New Attitude,” because she knows that she'll look great at the interview. She’s seeing herself for the first time as someone with a sense of self-worth and rising self-esteem. She's wearing a new attitude.

Coach Update

The Coach website is now featuring nine of its iconic "classic" styles. A few months ago I wrote about the brand's descent to a gaudy, easily dated style. The brand is catering to an audience that prefers trendy accessories, but Coach is happily ringing up those sales!

Coach is still a luxury brand, but it has all but lost its sophistication, its quiet "old money" cachet. I'm happy to see the return of some of the classic styles. These legacy bags are made of glove-tanned leather and have a natural finish that ages beautifully.

There’s another Lady Di on the scene, my friend and trusted aesthetician Diana Kline, owner of Spa Bavu, the best place to be pampered in Philadelphia. The staff at Spa Bavu makes you feel like a spoiled celebrity from the moment you enter. This is all part of Diana’s anti-assembly line approach and her adherence to personalized attention.

“Ninety five percent of my clients say, 'Oh, I don’t have to wear sunscreen [everyday], but if I know I’m gonna be outdoors in summertime I’ll definitely wear it.…' That’s very interesting because the last time I checked we get daylight every day which means the sun comes out every day!

"Look for a sunscreen that gives UVA/UVB protection. UVA is responsible for aging skin. Application should not be an arduous process--you know how you use soap and deodorant daily? You should use sunscreen daily.” (Real Simple likes these bargain-priced products: C.O. Bigelow All-in-One Protective Daily Lotion SPF 25; Purpose Dual Treatment Moisture Lotion SPF 15; and Sonia Kashuk Replenish Essential Face Crème SPF 15.)

“You can also commit to a facial once a quarter--our skin needs exfoliation. The process will remove dead skin cells, erase dull tired skin, brighten (not lighten) up, and give you a nice dewy look. Exfoliation kicks off a domino effect--the process stimulates the fibroblasts’ production of collagen and elastin that we want for tightening. That is responsible for keeping your skin from sagging.

“Understand how much is too much and how much is too little. Get a consultation from a knowledgeable aesthetician. If you have sensitive skin--do not exfoliate two or three times a day. Don’t scrub a hole in your skin!

"You need to work on your skin but it doesn’t have to be an expensive proposition. Your repertoire should include a good cleanser, toner, exfoliant, moisturizer and sunscreen (you can get it combined). You can always add or subtract things--some women like a Vitamin C serum. A good Vitamin C serum will serve as an antioxidant and brighten your skin. It is an excellent antidote against environmental pollution. You can also use a high quality eye cream.

"Another tip--as the weather changes your skin care regimen should change. You know in the summertime everybody’s slicked up and has an oil build-up that you can fry a chicken in. In the wintertime it could be a completely different story. And as we mature that tends to be the case more often. You’re not going to use the same moisturizer in the summertime as you would in winter. It’s ok to make an adjustment."

Oops I Did It Again

I’m absolutely atwitter about an amazing vintage haul that I made at a friend’s house. She has been curating ladies clothing from local thrift shops for years and decided to part with many of the accumulated treasures. Most items were never worn after she had them dry cleaned. I was lucky enough to comb through the collection!

There were so many fabulous things: sassy little cocktail dresses, colorful silk shirtdresses and jackets for day, ladylike luncheon suits, even an emerald green bridesmaid’s dress that has strong possibilities as a hostess dress for New Year’s Eve festivities.

Resale stores are bustling nowadays; some are packed like the Tokyo subways. You’ve got to elbow your way through gaggles of chattering art students and other recessionistas who are looking for intact treasures from Betsey Johnson or Norma Kamali to amp up their personal style. So I was grateful for the opportunity to sift through these goodies in a quiet bedroom. Here’s the take:

Black double knit wool dress with faux jeweled mock turtleneck. No need for a necklace; all eyes will follow this one (pictured).
Early 1960s peach wool skirt suit with a fur trimmed jacket. Perfect for high tea at the Ritz (jacket pictured).
Stray cat-grey modified swing jacket with shawl collar and embroidered details all over. Great for the office with a pencil skirt, dark grey scoop neck and tights, or on weekends with slim pants and ballet flats (pictured).
A yellow and black 100% rayon dress from the 1970s that only needs to be cinched by a black patent belt to totally rock (pictured).
Chocolate soufflé-brown wool coat with a fetching fox fur collar.
Sleeveless black lace cocktail dress with black velvet sash at the waist. Reminds me of the Audrey Hepburn/Humphrey Bogart film Sabrina.

The key to pulling off these looks is current makeup, an unstoppable hairstyle, and shoes, boots, and jewelry so fierce that you can feel the growl. Just don’t go vintage from head to toe--you don't want to wear a costume.

Bold Sole Sister

The NY Times recently ran a story that will satisfy your sole. If you are a fashionista who refuses to sacrifice style for comfort, read this article!

You probably remember hearing grandma say, “If your feet hurt everything hurts.” She was right and that’s why she adopted “sensible shoes.” Sensible usually means boring, but my shoes must be sexy and comfortable--these are non-negotiable. I can strut much more effectively in 3” heels than I can in 5½” platform pumps and can rock the heck out of a pair of kitten heels or flat boots.

If you’re hesitant about entering a new comfort zone, just remember--the pinched look on the fashion victim’s face is because her feet are aflame. Winching with each step is so unattractive!

Making A List, Checking It Twice

‘Tis the season for lists--holiday gift lists, personal wish lists, Oprah’s go-buy-this-now list, top 100 songs of the year lists, New Year’s Eve guest lists. This year Casual Friday has a list to share with you. Here's what we're wishing for this year...

1. My sisters will buy clothes that fit properly. Banish the blouses that pull across the bust, the low rise pants that almost fasten beneath overflowing bellies. Junk the jackets that pull tighter than a corset, straining buttons that could pop off, ricochet, and put somebody’s eye out. Toss out tight skirts that show too many lumps in the rump. Pass on painted-on looks. Spandex can fool you into thinking that if you can still breathe it fits. But the waistband is digging deep into your midriff, cutting off circulation to the lower extremities. That’s why your feet feel all tingly!

2. My sisters will buy the right undergarments. One word. Spanx. If Spanx is too rich for your budget Target has an inexpensive line “Assets,” that does a great job of smoothing and firming. Stop the jiggle! Get firm! Create a smooth, lump-free line under everything. Bonus--you’ll look ten pounds thinner.

Two words. New bras. Get refitted! Bra sizes change with time, weight gain/loss and childbirth. That mean old man, Gravity, delivers the final 1-2 punch. Don’t let the girls droop--pull them up from your waistband. Chances are you’ll find a more comfortable, flattering fit that’ll lend to a sexier silhouette, better fitting garments, and second glances from not-so-secret admirers.

VPLs. No excuses anymore. You are not relegated to fanny floss. Boy shorts come in every color, size, and fabric. They’re cute, unabashedly sexy and incredibly comfortable.

Slips. Wear ‘em! They keep that darling little BCBG dress from bunching up between your legs as you walk. If you’re sentenced to wearing pantyhose, this little slice of silk or nylon can help calm the cling.

3. Mama wants another pair of boots. Boots can add a fierce element of cold calculating style to your winter wardrobe. Ankle low, knee high, western, biker, flat or wedge--I can’t get enough. Boots make me feel powerful like Wonder Woman, sleek like Catwoman, proud like the conquering she-ro. I can climb Mount St. Helens and not get ashed. Wrestle with my conscience and win. Grind my stiletto heel into the faces of those who dare me. Right now I have my eye on a pair of black suede ankle boots from Naya with a half-inch platform sole, origami flower detail and a walkable 3” heel. Winter can be sexy.

4. Kinky peep toe shoes from Sofft. Speaking of footwear, how about a pair of sexy strappy glossy shooties ($110)? The straps makes the foot look caged. Lots of studs. Zippers and straps, call it a wrap. I’ll take them. I feel wicked just looking at them!

5. Faux cheetah coat from Garnet Hill. The coat is as cute as a tiger cub. Daring and loaded with attitude. Oversized portrait collar, slim shape, plush velvety fleece. The only thing Jane had that was this sexy was her man Tarzan. Above-knee length and modestly priced ($180), this could be a signature look for the chilly fashionista.

6. Better mascara. A formula that doesn’t cost $25, fluffs in one coat, and doesn’t make my lashes look like little black spikes.

7. The return of Bobbi Brown’s “Cassis” lip color. Bobbi discontinued one of the sexiest colors ever to coat these luscious lips. It was a rich ruby red with brown undertones that worked well with dark skin. It ignited the inner vixen of any woman wearing it, giving her an old school pin-up glamour. Haven’t found a worthy substitute yet.

8. More vintage! Hip, funky, inspirational pieces of fashion’s past. Love the thrill of the hunt and the opportunities to create one-of-a-kind looks.

9. A bailout for Loehmann's. The designer discount chain is in deep financial doggie-do, and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization last month. Love the higher end designers offered at many of their stores. Once snagged a pebbled leather Michael Kors shoulder bag there for less than $100.

10. Another year at 12th Street Gym. Year 11! Spinning. Tae Bo. Step. Weight Training. Yoga. Looking fierce, feeling fabulous.

The Fossil 2010 holiday gift guide arrived today. Leafing through...nice stuff. Great crossbody bags, and lots of vintage-inspired accessories: watches for ladies and gents, woolly hats and scarves, colorful flower pins, glitzy necklaces and earrings. Lots of bright shiny things that will broaden your smile and brighten your day.

But the coolest and most craved accessory for this blogger is the Fossil Maddox tote. It's large. It's loud. It's $228. It's perfect.

This is a fabulously psychedelic hunk of leather that would work with everything you own. Working it on the weekdays, and on Saturday for errands and a gossipy lunch (with wine) with your best friend.

Vintage Coats

The brisk winds of autumn are kicking up again, and it’s time to pull on colorful tights and cashmere-lined gloves. Biker jackets, pea coats, trenches and hoodies will keep you snug as a bug in a rug, but if you really want to work the personal style, vintage coats are your ticket.

I have three vintage coats (see pics below) and each one makes a unique style statement. Each coat was bargain priced and proves that you can get more for less. Here's how to make the best choices. Study labels and fabrics. Watch Douglas Sirk movies or films from the French New Wave. Read about Studio 54 and check out the outrageous fashions of the 1970s. Scan the wonderous street styles on The Sartorialist! Then visit Goodwill, the Salvation Army, local resale stores. Spend $20, look like a million bucks and be warm as toast.

Village Thrift Find

The main reason that I bought this coat was its price--$5. It's from the now-defunct Village Thrift Store chain where I also found a pleated black wool crepe Chanel skirt for $5. Needless to say, this shopper's diligence paid off!

I’ve worn this coat to parties where the “hip” vibe was stratospheric. It’s big (great for layering), warm and the fur collar is Cocker Spaniel-cuddly!

Franklin Simon Evening Coat

This beautiful coat belonged to my mom. When I was a kid, she wore it when she and my dad went to cabarets and parties that lasted into the wee hours of the morning. If this coat was on her shoulders there was a sweet overnight stay ahead for me at my grandmother’s or great aunt’s house.

It's an adorable cover up for sexy velvet evening skirts, crystal-studded sweaters, rows of silk ruffles and ropes of pearls. For day, this is a glamorous head turner. I would never wear this coat without stepping up my game, so I wear it with my current favorite lipstick color, Bobbi Brown’s Burnt Red.

Ercoli Coat

I was introduced to the Ercoli brand in 1996. Their boutique always gave me a kid-in-a-candy store high with their dizzying spinning wheels of color splashed all over comfortable, wearable clothing. It was a place where I could find delightful overdyed wallpaper print dresses and jackets that reminded me of Aunt Bert’s sofa print.

I spotted this coat on a rack while shopping in their South Philadelphia warehouse. I asked how much, was told $10, and immediately snatched it up. I can wear it anywhere. It’s fabulous for day, always gets second looks and tons of compliments. It’s a lush, jungle green tapestry which lends a springtime air to chilly days.

L.L. Bean--Tweaking Tradition

The other day the L.L. Bean Signature Collection catalog landed in the mail. L.L. Bean was never on my fashion radar, but a couple of years ago I ordered a pair of their cozy shearling slippers and an adorable and affordable faux shearling coat, so I was on their mailing list.

L.L. Bean is widely known for mom jeans and boxy cardigans with tomatoes or frogs knitted into them, and styles and colors that are about as exciting as peat moss. Pepto pink, seafoam green and mud brown have been popular colors on their palette.

I expected more of the same when I opened the catalog, but was pleasantly surprised to find stuff that I really want in my closet. Like a navy Donegal tweed jacket styled like a vintage hacking jacket. Fitted, self-belt, with leather elbow patches. Hits at the top of the hip. Cute, cute, cute and infinitely wearable!

I was also ready to pull out the credit card for a zippered pebbled leather fold over clutch in black or dark brown with brass hardware. Another favorite piece is the wide-legged stretch denim trouser. Cuffed with a pleated front, all you need is a fierce pair of heels to create a leggy Charlie Girl look. And this collection has a fierce and fabulous brogue. Vintage look with perforated details. Platform sole with a 3½” heel. Comes in a smokin’ black patent and a gorgeous saddle tan.

So, what gives? Alex Carleton, L.L. Bean’s new creative director, took their legendary quality and added style. Updated fits closer to the body, pants with a lower rise. Skirts pretty enough to be featured in the pages of Elle, More, InStyle and Lucky.

How cool! Kudos to L.L. Bean for flying its chic flag and giving us more to add to our wish lists. Check out their website--I'm sure you'll be surprised!

Green Daze

An acquaintance traveling in Brussels and Amsterdam tells me that their hot, must-have color of the season is green. Grass, asparagus, string bean green. Lush forest green. Soothing, relaxing, it is second only to blue as a favorite color. Green doesn’t incite uncontrollable passions--it is the color of peace.

He sent me pics of shop windows to illustrate the point. I like the idea of pairing this color with black, midnight blue or chocolate. Will this fresh hue hit the states in Autumn 2011? These gorgeous tones will make it easy to be green.

Plaid Men

Target has saturated the TV airwaves with ads featuring handsome guys decked out in plaid shirts. Red & blue, grey & yellow, brown & white, green & purple--name your favorite color combo and it‘s available in plaid. For many, plaid shirts are a vivid reminder of the early 1990s grunge scene, but they have been standard issue for lumberjacks, carpenters, gardeners, and granddads for generations. Plaid screams "tradition" and this season we’re seeing more traditional casual and dress attire for men and women.

Plaid shirts connote "real" men. Not the “Home Improvement” buffoons, but guys more like Norm Abram, master carpenter on PBS’s perennial, “This Old House.” A man wearing a plaid shirt implies a master of tools, art, music and nature. He’s an angst-ridden guy who writes fretful songs, knows how to use a reciprocating saw, and will help you retile your bathroom. He can manicure the boxwood, select and plant azaleas, tame crabgrass and move boulders. He will calm the wild beasts, including your twitchy Cockapoo or sweet, but soggy-mouthed, Newfoundland.

I usually keep a couple of plaid flannel shirts on hand during the winter. My favorite is a old Gap chamois-soft turquoise & navy blue which has withstood countless washings and is really cozy on a chilly day. If you need to restock your supply you can find them in a broad range of prices and stores. The Gap has a $49.50 model, there is also Rag & Bone for $220, Diesel for $120, Ralph Lauren for $195, and a wool/cashmere manning plaid from Bergdorf Goodman for $725. (I think I’d buy a couple of coats with that cash.)

Beloved

In this season of classic styles I started wearing a watch that my dad gave me many years ago. It is a beautiful, timeless piece crafted by Wittnauer, one of the top watchmakers in the world. I don’t recall whether or not I needed a new watch at the time of the gift but I was happy to dispose of an ugly, inelegant digital display piece that had embarrassed my wrist for months.

For the past few years this watch had been lying at the bottom of my jewelry box, lacking a working battery and a stylish watchband. This watch is not a chronograph, doesn’t have a heart rate monitor or screechy little alarm. It won’t tell me the time in Reykjavik but it adds an authentic new dimension to the look I’m cultivating. Delicate, small gold framed rectangular face, Roman numerals, new black lizard band. It is tiny on my wrist, delicate like a tattoo. Sometimes I have to squint to see if it’s lunchtime. Although I wore this watch every day for years, I’ve become accustomed to my sportier, funkier watches with their oversized, backlit faces and wider straps.

I love this watch and had forgotten how much I enjoyed wearing it. In this era of cell phone as timepiece, it is a privilege to have an accessory that lends an air of sophistication to my everyday life. Thanks, Daddy. I think of you every time I wear it.

Coach Has Left the Building

“Coach has lost its mind,” a good friend uttered as we passed the Coach store on Walnut Street. I agreed, sadly. The window was dotted with gaudy, logo-laden handbags loaded with shiny hardware. They looked like cheap souvenirs.

Coach had been a sophisticated staple of my life for decades. The hallmark of a Coach bag had always been rich colors, with impeccable construction featuring sturdy brass hardware and luxurious leathers that grew lovelier with age. Coach bags were never trendy; they were simple, elegant styles that complimented both casual and working wardrobes. You never worried about them going out of style or going with everything. Buying a Coach bag was an investment, the purchase of a quiet status symbol. The classic Coach was the best-designed handbag, built to last a lifetime.

I bought my first Coach bag when I was 26 and it was my constant companion for years. Over time I accumulated a few more, including an oversized tote in British Tan that was used daily, usually stuffed to capacity. (I had to do shoulder strengthening exercises at the gym to carry it comfortably!) It eventually became my carry on for in-flight entertainment, food and necessities.

Some would use the word “opulent” to describe the new designs; I use the word tacky. Some of the contemporary Coach bags look like scenes from a bad acid trip. Are these collections for adults or children? Candy colors. Shiny, noisy, inelegant. Over-logo’d. I saw a $298 backpack on the Coach website that was made of printed denim canvas. I will accept nothing less than leather at that price.

I’m clinging to my classic Coaches and plan to have them buried beside me. Most of these bags are no longer in production and can only be found on eBay or in consignment shops. Recently I’ve seen a few 20-somethings with vintage Coach bags hanging from their shoulders. Maybe they raided their mothers’ closets for the Stewardess or the Willis bag. Maybe they are learning the classics.

Falling--Again

Here are a few more recommendations for fall 2010--just in time for the start of our last summer heatwave.

Sweater Dressing – Yes
Nothing could be more comforting. When the thermometer dips and the winds are brisk, a chunky knit sweater with an oversized collar can’t be beat. It’s like having your own personal nest. As the autumn leaves crunch under the soles of your bad ass boots you’ll feel caressed and coddled under layers of soft wool, cotton, alpaca, or cashmere. The Sche Report notes four main categories of sweater dressing: Layered Knitwear (using thin gauge knits); Sweater as Dresses; She’s Crafty (intricate crafty creations from designers such as Rodarte and Missoni); and Nordic Warrior (featuring Fair Isle designs).

Utilitarian Chic – Yes
Jacket and pants with uniform-like references--lots of pockets, snaps and zippers. What’s cool about this trend is that you probably already have this stuff in your closet--it’s easy-to-wear, sporty, and hip. Pair your olive green army-inspired jacket with a long-sleeved ruffled T-shirt and layers of jewel colored glass beads, or with a lightweight tee silk screened with a rock band logo (The Beatles, AC/DC, Nine Inch Nails), and a funky fringed silk scarf for warmth. If you’ve got slim fitting khakis, a leather bomber jacket or a trench coat in a neutral color, you may only need to update your accessories. This trend features items that can be found at wallet-friendly retailers (The Gap, Old Navy, Target) as well as high end merchants (Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom).

Classic Camel – Yes
Contrary to my early summer post – camel is the color for fall 2010 (no hard feelings red, OK?). Shades of warm tan and beige are everywhere. For many it signals a return to elegance. Camel can be worn by anyone, with anything, for any occasion, and has amazing versatility. You may already have a treasured piece–-camel cashmere cardi, beloved handbag, stylish overcoat--in your closet. However, if you don’t have a scrumptious butterscotch or caramel-colored item, it won’t be hard to find a stand out piece this year. Every designer, every store has something that will make you feel richer, sleeker, classier.

Gimme That Wine*

Mary Janes, platform pumps, stilettos, oxfords, ballet flats. Shoes are many things to many people and there are innumerable ways to express yourself through your choice of footwear. The right shoe makes you feel glamorous and powerful. The wrong shoe puts you on the short road to torture.

You know which kinky boots to wear on the first date. You would never wear flip-flops to the White House. Your running shoes enable you to be as fleet footed as Mercury, messenger of the Roman gods.

However, did you know that in addition to being a missile, hammer, or weapon of mass seduction your shoe can open a bottle of wine? Watch this video and you'll be amazed! Caveat - this method will not work for screw top caps or boxes.

Trends for Fall 2010

It’s August. Summer is still bearing down on us and it’s hard to think about fall. But if you’re a trend setter or a trend spotter, here is a short list of looks for your consideration.

Equestrian - No
This look (jodphurs, tailored jackets, and slim, sometimes quilted vests, flat boots) has been trotted out for way too many seasons. (Adding a riding crop might make things a bit more interesting.) As an urban girl I cannot imagine looking like I just left the Devon Horse Show and will be mucking out the stalls later. Who walks around like that? Especially if the last horse you saw was a wooden one on the carousel. And just where do you wear this look—shopping? Clubbing? Sunday brunch?

Metallic - Yes
All that glitters! This 1980s trend is back, but be careful. You don’t want to look like you wandered out of a Reynolds Wrap ad. Metallic color was seen on most runways at Paris Fashion Week. Current trends include crinkled Lurex, tote bags in gold leather, shimmery brocade blouses, and metal watchbands. The main metallic color in most fall collections is gold, although there are cool looks in platinum, copper and silver. The July Vogue featured a melodramatic fashion tale inspired by late 1950s cinema. It was brilliant, gorgeous and absolutely inspiring. Think Dior’s New Look, or Douglas Sirk’s glossy melodramas such as All That Heaven Allows, Magnificent Obsession, and Written on the Wind. Kitten heels, full sweeping skirts with narrow waistbands, slim but ladylike pants. The epitome of vintage glamour! Ultra feminine looks that flatter a woman’s body. A New Leaf

I got the fall 2010 Boden catalog a few days ago and realized that I don’t need everything in it. This is a first for me; I always spent hours poring over its pages of colorful velvet blazers, funky appliqued a-line skirts (see photo) and body hugging floral print jersey dresses. Imagining myself draped in colors with names that summon smiles such as silver melange, damson, petrol and sulfur. Prints with outrageous names like chocolate 40s floral, yellow puffball, and navy pop spot. Great quality goods with reasonable prices.

I’m trying to buy less. Soon I’ll be weeding out dozens of items that don’t jibe with Me 2.0 and not replacing them. I’m moving towards classic styles in classic colors with funky accessories. The pencil skirt will now become a staple, worn with turtlenecks, boots, flats, high heels, black tights. Cashmere cardis, fitted jackets in good wool or corduroy over long sleeved T-shirts or fabulous button down shirts. Great jeans. The timeless sheath dress.

Goodbye to things that pill, stretch and fade. Goodbye to trends and fads. Goodbye to cute. I am creating a system that makes decision making easy by narrowing choices. No more buying it in every color. No more buying because “it’s a good price.” Everything has to have a real purpose.

You could say that I was inspired by the shopping diet (see July 24 post), or by my visit to Joan Shepp, but the reality is that I have too much stuff. I have to turn over a new leaf.

I enjoy looking at imaginative, oh-wait-slow-down window displays, but they’re in short supply in metal gate-obsessed Philadelphia. However, one store’s window is always cool – Joan Shepp. This high end boutique near Rittenhouse Square carries the best designers: Balenciaga, Chloe, Ann Demeulemeester, Christian Louboutin, Yohji Yamamoto, as well as hot new labels like Elizabeth and James and Opening Ceremony, among others. I’ve traditionally admired this boutique only from the outside—it’s a bit too rich for my slim wallet.

So imagine my surprise when a friend and I stopped at Joan’s window one evening and I spotted this gorgeous Beracamy Paris bag at 50% off! Half-price made it affordable! Other bags available at the store include a leather backpack by Johnny Frank ($1,245), leather tote from Ann Demeulemeester ($2,216), and one of the store’s favorites, a large leather tote from Givenchy ($1,660). Half-price for these items for most of us still means choosing between groceries for a few weeks or the admiration of other fashionistas.

The next day I stopped in to confirm the discounted price. I still doubted that the marked down price ($200) was correct—it’s a steal for high quality leather. Well, the price was correct so I bought the bag. The afro puff-soft leather is a dark camel color. The spacious interior is fully lined with pockets for my cell phone, mp3 music player and keys. I’m in love!

Here’s what else I loved--the staff at Joan Shepp is helpful, patient and friendly to everyone who comes in. They don’t annoy shoppers by helicoptering, but you don’t have to wander far to find someone to answer questions, offer advice or search for a smaller size. A wonderful sales consultant, Yoko Arayama, assisted me. She was pleasant and accommodating. While I waited to make my purchase we struck up a conversation about buying quality items. She advised me that all merchandise at Joan Shepp is not out of reach, and to consider revisiting the store.

Usually I walk out of a store relieved that I don’t work there. I get an attitude brought on by stalled lines, self-absorbed clerks chatting among themselves instead of waiting on customers, loud music. My experience at Joan Shepp was classy and civilized. The courtesy Ms. Arayama showed was mirrored by all of the boutique staff.

Everyday courtesy is in short supply right now—it’s 95 degrees and everyone is in meltdown mode. But you know what? I’ll save up and treat myself to another visit to Joan Shepp (when they're having a sale).

You're Wearing What??

This article from the NY Times made me want to clean out my overstuffed closets and learn to exist on only eight items (sorry—six would feel like a school uniform). A great report and fun read on an interesting month-long “fashion fast.” Many participants felt liberated afterwards!

I would choose these eight items if I were to participate: a pair of black leggings, black skinny jeans, black skirt, black boyfriend jacket, two white tees, and two gray tees. What would you choose? Could you choose?

What a Doll - Defending A Style Icon

Am I the only woman who was not traumatized by Barbie? My dad bought me Barbie and Midge for Christmas when I was eight. The dolls were the Fashion Queen models that came with a set of three wigs that could be styled according to their moods, outfits or personas. They arrived in a big ol’ red vinyl case with storage for dozens of glamorous outfits that could have come straight from the pages of Vogue: strapless stain jumpsuits, bolero jackets, peplum skirts, classic sheath dresses, slim velvet pants, sweaters with angora collars, cork wedgies.

I thoroughly enjoyed Barbie as she was--a fashion icon for the playground set. For my friends and me the Barbie scenario was always about getting dressed for a special event. Choosing the right outfit for the matinee or the dinner party. My dolls didn’t have poufy wedding gowns, but they had plenty of dresses to wear to work.

Barbie was never my body ideal because she didn’t look like me. I wasn’t stupid--Barbie was a grown up, I was a little kid. She was white, I am black. Besides, my childhood role model was my mother. She was pretty and had lots of cool clothes and accessories. A hunk of molded plastic was simply a way to pass time.

I don’t get the anti-Barbie rant. If a young girl’s identity is wrapped up in a hunk of plastic you need to ask what kind of relationships are being forged among the women in that family. Are they demonstrating strong identity and self worth to the daughters? Look closely at your family’s values for women and the powerful messages that are being communicated everyday. If the girls in your family, in your acquaintance, in your charge, put more stock into a toy to craft their identities don’t rant and point fingers at the toymaker. Check yourself and the messages that you send about being a woman.

Barbie was fun, but her life wasn’t real. Set a better example!

Hot, Hot, Hot

We’re baking, frying, panting, sweating, dripping. Moving more slowly, loathe to leave cool comfortable cars and cribs. Cocooning in the air conditioning. Idling with iced drinks.

On a two- or three-shower day why would anyone drape their bodies with anything that isn’t absolutely necessary? Young fashion victims are stomping around town in calf-high Frye engineer or Tony Lama cowboy boots and barely there lace sundresses. You cannot convince me that their sweaty little feet and ankles prefer that style in this satanic heat. House plants will wilt when they take off those bad boys.

Leggings under dresses? It’s a great look that I often sport on casual days but it looks downright dumb on a 100 degree afternoon. It’s one more article of clothing that I don’t want sticking to me. I don’t want to feel like a picnic leftover swaddled in Saran Wrap.

I’m equally puzzled over the head wrap under the wide brimmed hat. The head wrap is a great look, a head turning statement for individuality. The wide brimmed hat is a perfect way to keep harmful UV rays off your beautiful face. It can be very Audrey@Tiffany’s. I’ve seen a few fashionistas rock the hat with a fabulous faux jeweled hat pin. Glamour! But I don’t get the combination of the two on a sweltering day. How hot do you want to be? Just how bad is your bad hair day?

Which leads me to one of my favorite rants--the weave! Come on sistas! Give it a rest! Rows and rows of extra hair sewn in or glued to your existing hair--how hot are those extra layers? How much more does your head weigh? Can you take a cooling dip in the pool or are you afraid of dunking your ‘do? Think about taking a break for the summer. Liberate yourself! Remember how carefree you were as a kid in the summertime with your hair pulled back in plaits, cornrows or afro puffs? You’ll be surprised at how good natural hair can look and feel even now.

Right now the imperative is to look and feel cool. Strip it down to the basics--lacy lingerie, cool little dresses (you can find plenty of adorable sundresses on sale right now as the stores clear out summer wear in preparation for Fall), and strappy sandals.

This heat wave will pass. Before you know it, you’ll be shoveling the walkway and grumbling about the latest arctic blast. Remember, as hot as it is right now, you can remain chic and graceful. Just leave the boots in the back of the closet until September.

When I’m 77 I’ll be sassy and classy. I’ll be stylin’ something fierce, like my great aunt Lucile. Elegant like Bacall and Horne, ravishing like Kitt. Eccentric, wearing whatever the moon dictates. Colorful, crazy. Outfitted in urban black accented with swaths of Ruby Tuesday red, Baby Boy blue and Sunshine Superman yellow. Jangling in mom’s brassy bracelets and ropes of faux pearls. Rocking a cap of cropped glacier-white hair.

White jeans, the ultimate symbol of summer, are everywhere right now. I love them--they bring to mind sunny beaches, outdoor concerts at dusk, dining at sidewalk cafes in the city. Firenze Fantasies

No doubt I'm going back to Florence. I was there for an unfortunately abbreviated visit in 2008 and fell in love with the Renaissance city. It is rich with some of Italy's best and most popular museums, breathtaking cathedrals, and elegant shops.

A friend recently traveled to Florence and reminded me of another reason to start planning my return--unspeakably gorgeous leather goods. Check out her colorful pics of shop windows and remind me to keep my passport updated!

Trend watchers and style makers have spoken and the color for fall 2010 is-–RED! There was a lot of it heating up the fall runways and it looks so right with the workday neutrals. Everyone looks fabulous in red and there is a shade that flatters every skin tone. It’s a color that warms the soul, stokes passion, whets the appetite. It’s bold, sexy, confident, and may lower your inhibitions.

But before you jump out there in head-to-toe ruby with rose-colored accents, please remember that most things are best is moderation. Consider a pair of tomato red suede pumps with a black sweater dress, or a cherry red cardigan with a chocolate felted wool pencil skirt. I would like a coral cashmere scarf tucked snugly around my neck with a black pea coat.

So, get your red on, and wear a little bit of your heart on your sleeve (or your back, head and hands) this fall.

Some say that lower heels are just around the corner. Leaning towers of woman are almost passe. Skyscraper soles that put your perfectly coiffed head closer to the clouds are clumping towards oblivion. Sleek kitten heels will be padding their way back into your closets. Modern, easy-to-wear three-inch heels (the new “low”) will return. You’ll be able to descend stairs without gripping your best friend‘s shoulder for support.

After a few years of shoe styles that led many fashion victims to the chiropractor’s office or left them yearning for a soothing foot bath and massage, “sensible” shoes are returning. According to Mark Holgate in Vogue, “…it’s reduced heels that have really caught the eye.” He advises us to “…get ready to look different and look at the world differently.” He acknowledges, however, that his empirical research in Saks and Bergdorf Goodman yielded no takers for the new styles. Superhigh platforms shape a woman’s legs as well as her view of the world. A woman in six-inch heels can look her male boss in the eye. But does equal in height translate to equal in power?

Designers are working to make the new shoes colorful and sexy, with cutaways and ankle straps. New styles from Christian Louboutin, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs and others promise flirty, elegant, feminine looks. Get ready to walk!

MAS*H Notes--The Houlihan Pant

She was the love interest of the repressed, hypocritical war hawk Major Frank Burns, a talented and dedicated nurse, and an object of lusty ridicule by Majors Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre. She was uptight, rigid and unquestionably sexy. And now there’s a trendy military inspired pant named after her.

Major Margaret Houlihan gave olive drab an appealing swagger. The J Brand Houlihan pant, the pant of the season, will give you some of that simmer. This pant is a stand out in a season of military/utility inspired clothing. The Houlihan is fitted, cropped, with a long ankle zipper and shorter inseam that makes it great for shorter women. The fit is unforgiving, so keep up your leg and booty toning work at the gym. It’s made from a lightweight but rugged fabric--Japanese cotton twill with two percent Lycra. Vintage wash. Celeb endorsements: seen on pop stars like Rhianna, Gwen Stefani, and Ciara.

If you can get your mitts on a pair, your wallet will be $230 lighter. The pant has been available at Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Barney's NY and Bloomingdale's, but has been a sellout at each store. Knocks-offs have to be right around the corner--keep your eye on Forever 21, Uniqlo, and The Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy. In the meantime, you could prepay for one of the 40,000 pairs that are on back order.

Janet Jackson has a new look -- very close cropped hair. And it’s news. Celeb watchers everywhere are feverishly asking each other -- why?? Most posts I’ve seen on the topic begin with an outraged “OMG!”

Here we go again -- the age old discussions about hair and women’s identity. Janet removed the extensions and went natural. She has (for now) shunned the flowing shoulder length locks that we associate with her. Does she feel naked or free?

Janet has a face that the camera loves and she’s rocking her natural hair. She looked great in the photos that I saw. This look has been embraced by many sistas for decades and has been carried off with ample attitude and tremendous style.

A pixie cap of curls, kinks, waves. Yes, the crop is a bold move, but showing the world how much you love your hair is a sign of confidence. And confidence is sexy. Go, Janet!

Viva Vintage!

One of my 2010 style resolutions is to wear my beloved vintage items more often. These quirky pieces are brimming with history and stories of love and loss, striving and succeeding.

A recent New York Times slide show ”Vintage Finds From Around the World” is a testament to our enduring love of unique, dramatic pieces. Readers from around the globe uploaded pics of their favorite vintage pieces and shared why they loved them. Sample items: grandma’s leather boots, Louis Vuitton luggage, prom dresses from the ‘50s, ‘70s and ‘80s, elegant day wear from the ‘50s that recall Grace Kelly, and a motorcycle helmet that recalls Evel Knievel.

My favorite vintage accessories are the boxes of costume jewelry that I inherited from my mother and grandmother. Attention-getters like a two-headed snake bracelet, bold brassy necklaces and medallions. Ropes of faux pearls that dress up a classic black sweater and black pants. Glittery flirty pieces that add a little jazz to the day.

Sew What?

A friend and I were discussing the importance of good tailoring which can make the difference in your suit jacket hanging on you like a sleeping bag, or looking as if was hand made to accent your gorgeousness. And, yes, good tailoring can make you look as if you spend hours at the gym pressing, squatting, spinning and lunging. It can make a cheap suit look expensive and mean the difference between “you’re hired/you’re hot” or not.

Tailoring is for everyone. Nothing fits perfectly off the rack, not even spandex bike shorts. Be honest in the dressing room. Tailors are happy to hem your slacks, let out your waistband or replace that zipper that you broke in rush hour haste. The best ones can give advice on the best fit or length for you. If you have a good tailor you can buy that darling Kenneth Cole dress that is a little too big at ½ off and have it lovingly nipped and tucked to fit the best parts of you.

You can be tres chic with the assistance of a needle and thread in skilled hands. The local dry cleaner can handle routine sewing requests such as hems and replacing buttons. For more complicated matters such as refitting suits or replacing linings, I recommend an old school tailor whose work uniform includes a tape measure worn rakishly around his or her neck. However, if you’re lucky enough to have an aunt or cousin who knows her way around a Singer sewing machine, take your clothes to her with a good bottle of wine as a down payment. Just make sure that you raise your glasses after she has measured, pinned and basted.

Walk A Mile in These Shoes

I’m smiling because two new pairs of fabulous summer flats from 6pm.com arrived on my doorstep this week. Both pairs are black, flat and shiny with big buckles. One pair is a perforated ballet flat by Bella Vita, the other is a dainty peep-toe by Donald J Pliner. Both were on sale at giveaway prices. The Pliner shoes have ankle straps, a dancer’s pedigree, and look as if they were rinsed in gold spray paint. The Bella Vita shoes are great for those warm days when your pedi is raggedy but you still want to look cute. It’s likely that I’ll live in these shoes for much of the summer--they are funky, unique and will make everything look fresher.

The Chucks Report – Exclusive Edition

This caption from the March 2010 Harper’s Bazaar caught my eye, “Vintage Missoni prints go modern in a new collaboration with Converse.” These Chuck Taylor sneakers featuring the iconic Missoni print are $200 a pair and will be available at boutiques in NYC and Beverly Hills early next month. But at that price are they still the ultimate in cheap cool? Would you wear them daily until the soles disintegrated? Would you wear them in the rain or on a muddy field? How about to a beer-soaked dance party where they’re destined to be stepped on and splashed on? If I bought these, I'd have them encased in glass with a prominently placed sign, "For Emergency Use Only."

Shoe Be Do

I took a step back in time with one of my most recent shoe purchases. Had to--still can’t understand the appeal of the current Lego-land shoes or the desire to mince along city streets in 6” heels.

I wrote about the style ascent of women’s wingtips last summer (see July 11 2009 post) and spent the months following that post drooling over fuchsia patent, black and white, or silver wingtips by Robert Clergerie, Kenneth Cole, and Charles Tyrwhitt. Gorgeous shoes that would force brown bagging every day for the second quarter of 2010.

A recent article in More magazine on the exquisite former model Veronica Webb featured her in a cute pair of cream colored wingtips with a sunrise high price tag. I wanted that look and resolved to scour the Internet to find it for a sunset low price.

I was a fan of Bass Weejuns as a teenager and nubuck lace ups as a thirty-something, so it was a small leap to the GH Bass website in search of an affordable oxford. I found a collection of two-toned saddle shoes that are reminiscent of my (rebellious) Catholic school days. I chose a dune/wheat combo with a perforated upper and the traditional red sole. They’re so uncool that they’re cool! I’ll wear them with jeans and other slim pants this spring.

Won Over

The February issue of More magazine ran a brief article on Tracy Gardner, the President of J. Crew. Having recently shared my opinions about some of the retailer’s new offerings (see my January 20 and February 20 posts), I read the article to see if she had a good excuse for some of their marketing decisions. Of course, the interview didn’t touch on the issue of $79 cut offs or $168 skinny jeans with a paint splattered-finish.

What I found instead was a thoughtful over 40 fashionista who loves colorful classic looks with an urban edge. She believes in timeless versatility and displayed it in the items she wore for the article. She discussed evolving into your style and “creating the unexpected” look. And she looked fabulous! The article also featured available items that are sharp attention-getters such as a water color inspired pencil skirt, a rainbow of embellished tees and tanks, and the sleekest of slim pants.

A couple of days after reading the article I popped into the Center City store and found the clothes that were featured. I was smitten. These are looks for women of all ages and stages in life. I found the classic pencil skirt in a variety of unusual patterns and colors. Their collection of pants is far from ordinary. J. Crew now carries fabulous costume jewelry, and their wedding collection is still one of the coolest, most flattering collections that doesn’t have a high end designer name attached to it.

So, now I’m looking at J. Crew with a more favorable eye. It’s pushing me towards a more sophisticated spring, sans the paint splattered jeans, of course. For more gorgeous items, visit their website.

The latest J. Crew catalog has another puzzling item for sale -- jeans that appear to be paint splattered for $168 (Vintage Slim Jean in Painter Wash). I had jeans like that -- an old pair of men’s Levis from the Salvation Army that I wore to paint my kitchen. I never thought those jeans were sexy. I didn’t wear them with silver gladiator sandals, ropes of opera-length pearl necklaces and a silk jacket.

If you have a spare $168 to spend on the latest spring looks, I would suggest Calvin Klein dark wash skinny jeans for $49.50 at Macy‘s. They are just as sexy with ropes of opera-length pearls and a silk jacket. The extra $118.50 could score both the black gabardine Tahari boyfriend jacket at TJ Maxx, and ropes of inexpensive colorful necklaces at Ten Thousand Villages.

If you must have jeans with a painter’s wash this spring, come over to the house and help us paint the upstairs hall. We can get pizza!

Green Street Consignment

I visited Green Street Consignment Shop at 700 South Street with a friend last weekend. It’s one of my favorite consignment shops in the city -- the merchandise is always in good condition, and the selection is impressive with great labels and a nice range of sizes. The deal clincher, though, is the wall of career pants lining the back wall of the store. Navy, black, charcoal gray pinstripe. Boot cut, straight leg, suede, leather, wool, polyester. Back pockets, no pockets. Cuffed. Philly’s working fashionistas can unite behind that! It’s a rack that I’ll tackle on another visit.

The difference between Green Street and Buffalo Exchange is there isn’t an overabundance of items from H&M. Lately the Buffalo has become an outpost for sorority-girls’ H&M castoffs. Green Street's selections are more sophisticated and fashionable. The designer rack features hot names such as BCBG Max Azria, Prada, Theory, and Blumarine. There are Coach bags under glass and Louis Vuittons on the wall.

I bought an absolutely scrumptuous Tommy Hilfiger putty colored leather skirt that feels like buttah, a Japanese-inspired slate blue blouse covered in embroidered flower vines, and a brand new basic black chunky rib cotton turtleneck. The store also sells every accessory that a woman would want -- costume jewelry, hats, scarves, shoes, bags and assorted small leather goods. It’s all cool stuff and you can use your imagination to create a unique look for any occasion. So, take your best friend down to what used to be the hippest street in America and spend an hour at Green Street frolicking among the frocks. You won’t come out empty-handed.

Selected Shorts

On the back cover of the January J. Crew catalog is a cute outfit featuring a hip length white cotton shirt with a cascade of ruffles down the front and a pair of cutoff shorts. Here’s where it gets stupid - the shorts are $79.50. For a pair of cut offs?? The shorts are made of cotton denim, not woven titanium. I checked the description; there are no gems in the pockets. Nothing that you could pawn was sown into the inside seams. Michael Jackson did not sign these shorts. They are not Lady Gaga’s castoffs. However, they are the new “jaded” wash - the “faded” wash wasn’t worn out enough.

Here is a look that you can create for practically nothing. If you can’t bear to lop off the legs of your Sevens, Levi’s or Old Navys, take a trip to the nearest Salvation Army or Goodwill, grab a pair of worn out jeans for $7, take them home and get to snippin’. With such a tiny investment you can customize them. Make one leg shorter than the other. Add buttons and rhinestones. Embroider your name in fuchsia across the left back pocket. Bleach them, paint the Mona Lisa on them, dip Fido’s paws in gold paint and let him walk all over them. Do anything you want - or leave ‘em plain - just don’t pay $79.50 for a pair of cut offs! Step away from the insanity and slip that credit card back in your wallet. That money can buy you and your sweetie a decent meal at a number of good restaurants in the city. Or, use it for a pair of full length jeans!

Cover Me

The best concealer on the market is on its way to me in a small white box. I found it last year at Sephora, but I just ordered a new supply online from the Derm Store. It is the perfect match for my skin color and the perfect consistency for ease of use. It goes on easy and doesn’t cake during the day. Lorac is the brand; C7 is the color.

In my quest for coverage I’ve tried a bunch of products from high profile lines such as MAC, Prescriptives, Stila, and Fashion Fair, as well as countless drugstore brands. The colors were usually ghastly and the coverage was not long-lasting. I felt like I was wearing a mask with these products.

Lorac’s concealer covers very well but is not noticeable on my skin. I’m not trying to hide much, I just want to look better. I don’t want to look like I’ve applied makeup with a trowel; I’m not interested in Halloween everyday. So, if you are looking for coverage not overage, check out Lorac concealer. This stuff rocks!

Another Anthropologie Major

I am a latecomer to Anthropologie’s sale room. Found out about it through a friend of a friend. I work at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the headquarters for Urban Outfitters and its subsidiary brands, Free People and Anthropologie. I see the happy young fashionistas milling about everyday in the hottest styles, pushing the latest trends. On lunchtime walks I peer though the windows at the bolts of lively fabrics and adorable sample frocks fitted on the wire models. But I had never set foot in the Anthro sale room!

My first trip to the spot at 18th & Walnut was on a rainy Saturday after Christmas. I was delighted by the variety of items on the racks, shelves and in the bins. I expected to find clothing that no woman over 40 would wear but I was so wrong! Most of the clothing was appropriate for a high stylin’ over-40 fox. Strapless minidresses that could be paired with leggings and ballet flats for a funky Friday night outfit. Gorgeous colorful silk skirts in the perfect, most flattering length, tweed pencil skirts shot through with metallic thread. Luscious leather boots, sandals, belts and bags. Sweaters that are vibrant rainbows, plaid coats, and quirky home accessories such as embroidered lamp shades and thick, cozy throws.

On my first visit I bought a pair of tan leather thong sandals (had to return them, regrettably - ½” too short), and a purple, orange and black print silk skirt (I felt the tropical breezes against my legs when I tried it on). Second visit -- I bought gifts for friends. Third visit -- I bought a heavily discounted coffee table book featuring the photography of Richard Avedon, and a mustard tweed short sleeved cardigan that is a perfect layering piece. I’m a convert to the charms of the brand. It’s lively, sexy and un-ordinary. Print, texture and design details combine to make unique pieces to rev up your wardrobe.

Sometimes the sale room is a feeding frenzy of bargainistas; at other times you can stroll quietly and examine each item without feeling pushed to move on or having some tasty morsel snatched off the rack right under your nose. There is clothing for the business casual workplace, clothing for a night out, clothing for weekends. The best part (besides the dramatically slashed prices) is that the stuff in the sale room is current. I saw skirts and sweaters from the most recent Anthro catalogue on the racks. Unlike other discounters that are carrying merchandise from 2-3 years ago, Anthro never leaves you guessing about the currency of its discounted stock. Plus, new merchandise arrives every Tuesday.

One word of caution -- there may be items that have a date attached to them (e.g. 2009). Know what will make you look like just another fashion victim. For example, too many ruffled sweaters and scarves can give you the appearance of a multi colored head of lettuce. Take along an honest, open-minded friend whose opinion you trust. Better yet - take me along! We’ll have a fun time at Rittenhouse Square and the hot cocoa is on me!

Boots Made for Walkin’

Check out my cool boots from Eddie Bauer -- yes, you read the retailer’s name correctly -- Eddie Bauer. The Frye harness boot is the inspiration for this sturdy, traditional style stomper. These darlings can make a karate kick deadly or turn a foot stomp into an emergency room visit. Sometimes a girl needs a little extra protection.

The Eddie Bauer catalog shows up regularly in my stack of mail, but I haven’t ordered from them in years. The last significant order I placed was for a pair of low-heel milk chocolate brown leather knee high boots that I still wear and absolutely adore. (They remind me of Robin Hood -- I feel like I should have a great raucous adventure with my gang of merry sisters while wearing them.)

The Frye harness boot averages $225 although there are some pairs currently discounted to $159.84 on Zappos.com. No argument that they are well made from good materials in styles that your teenaged daughter would covet. They are made to last forever.

The Eddie Bauer boots are currently $129.99 on their website. I originally found them while absent mindedly flipping through their catalog over dinner. I thought about them for a minute, wondering how to fit them into my closet and my budget. However, based on past experience, I knew I would get a high quality product for a great price if I ordered from Eddie. The new boots are well made of the smoothest leather with great hardware, flexible though not flimsy soles, and a low stack heel that makes them easy to wear all day. They will make their debut once the ugly gray slush melts this weekend.

Top Ten Style Resolutions for 2010

Seek out more vintage wear - do a regular resale/vintage shop crawl. Create special, personal looks appropriate for my attitude and aspirations.
Toss out the cherry red nail polish and vamp with the Elvira-inspired colors. Just bought a knockout burnt midnight color, Sephora by OPI‘s “In The Shadows.”
Step away from the department stores and step up to the boutiques.
Bust out selected evening pieces to mix with daywear.
Continue my thrice weekly trips to 12th Street Gym.
Continue to wear things that hug the body that I’ve worked hard for!
Wear my vintage coats. At free/inherited, and five or ten dollars, they are small style investments that I should not hoard.
No schlub wear while shopping or running errands. You get more respect when you’re not rocking the charwoman look.
Wear the gorgeous vintage costume jewelry that I inherited from my mother, grandmother and great aunt. The pieces will look better dangling from my wrists or my throat than they will lying in the jewelry box.
Forgo hair color and keep the ultra cool Charlie Jones as my barber.

A Thing of Beauty

I recently bought a birthday gift for a friend from a mall store. I took it home and disliked it immediately. It was impersonal, nothing special. It occurred to me that if the gift didn’t delight me it probably wouldn’t delight my friend. I returned the gift to the mall store, and picked out something unique and thoughtful from a small neighborhood shop. I loved it and knew that my friend would, too. The gift was a truer reflection of her interests and preferences.

Avoid the cookie cutter, anonymous gift routine this year – support your local artisans. One of my favorite artisans is my friend Lynda Black. She has crafted a collection of colorful bracelets that make a statement without being gaudy. They are not baubles, not mere trinkets. Each one is flower bed-pretty and encircles your wrist in an eye-catching kaleidoscope.

Rockin’ the Casbah

Style is universal. Style is how you move through the world. It is the thumbprint that you leave, how people remember you. My hobby is style. I love to be surrounded by beautiful things, I love to carry and wear things that look and feel wonderful. Don’t we all?

I recently found Hijab Style, a style blog for Muslim women who wear hijab. It’s straight outta London and it rocks! Hijab is Arabic for “cover” and is the head scarf worn by Muslim women. It can also refer to the modest Muslim style of dress. Muslims differ as to how hijab dress should be enforced, but the blogger for Hijab Style is a fierce Muslim fashionista who shows us how to blend high style and modesty. The writer writes extensively and knowledgeably about contemporary fashion, contemporary Muslim women and the crossroads where they meet.

The blog features sections on evening wear, featuring hijab-friendly western designers such as Max Azria, Valentino, and Giambattista Valli. Sections on office wear feature items from Topshop and Ralph Lauren. There is coverage of Jakarta Fashion Week, street style from Dubai, and shout outs to Islamic clothing lines that explode with color and whimsy. My favorite items are the show stopping BQ sunglasses, which are described as a “new brand of shades with a chic twist on tradition.” BQs claim to be the “first sunglasses especially tailored for the piously dressed women in the Persian Gulf.” They appear to be a stylized mash up of racing goggles and a superhero mask.

This blog is fun and extraordinarily eye-opening; I could spend hours there. I'm not trading in my jeans or sundresses, but I gained a new perspective on Muslim women and the liberating aspects of the hijab. Check it out here.

The Steal

Recently enjoyed a weekday off. Visited the local Salvation Army to look through racks and racks of discarded togs for something special. I waded through dozens of oversized tweed jackets, worn out woolens, gaudy tropical prints, and dainty floral prints that reminded me of 1980s “made for TV” flicks starring Jaclyn Smith and the starlet-of-the-month as a psychotic babysitter.

The store was also overrun with discarded exercise videotapes, “Pocono Village” shot glasses, and a variety of outdated technology like cassette players, VCRs, CRTs, and analog TV sets. I was looking for an uber-bargain - a unique piece to brag about that would stoke envy in the hearts of cheapskates everywhere.

The furniture department was crammed with oversized floral sofas, and an occasional treasure from the bygone era of “real” furniture - an armoire or desk from the 1940s or early 1950s. That’s where I found the most unbelievable deal, a distressed black leather jacket, stashed away from greedy little hands (like mine). Zip front, faux fur lining for warmth. Hip length, perfect fit. $15!! The jacket would have cost at least twice as much at Buffalo Exchange or any of the other trendy resale shops downtown. I was ecstatic!

I love scouring second-hand stores - the thrill of the hunt, the unknown. Philadelphia lost many thrift stores over the past two decades (Village Thrift, Goodwill, other neighborhood shops) and treasures are harder to find in the stores that still exist. The hunt requires diligence, hours devoted to pushing through racks of droopy cottons, shabby silks, and scratchy acrylics to uncover the timeless Chanel skirt, the BCBG Max Azria blouse, the impeccably tailored Harris Tweed men’s business suit. Vintage stores often get their wares from the same Salvation Army that you visited last weekend, but they spend time and money having their purchases cleaned and pressed, then neatly hung in the shops.

So now I’m waiting for the temperatures to dip into the 40s to show it off. I will probably wear it with jeans, cords, and the pencil skirt that I just ordered from Boden USA. Woo-hoo!

The Chuck Report

Now available -- trimmed down Chucks!

$150 will buy the new white leather Chuck Taylor designed by the artist Terence Koh for the Converse 1 HUND(RED) line. Less rubber, styled more like the shoes that boxers wear in the ring. Minimalist, stripped down, they make a entirely different statement - delicate, not tough. Jazz, not hip hop. Peaceful posse, not gang wars. The NY Times quoted Mr. Koh as seeing the shoe as "a perfect round white pearl."

Judge for yourself. These shoes will be available beginning November 21 at Opening Ceremony, 35 Howard Street, New York. The design is appealing, and will likely sell well. I am partial to the traditional style (and the traditional price), but Christmas is coming and I've been pretty damn good ...

Ch-Ch-Ch Changes

One of the stores that I've ignored for years, Ann Taylor, is changing its stripes. Ann never really spoke to me -- it was a bit too conservative. I like items that are conceived with attitude and born to make a statement. Ann did business suits well. They did khakis and noncontroversial casual wear well. Their look worked well with lawyers, accountants and other glass-ceiling busters.

More recently Ann heard that glamor is not a bad word. A new design team revived their offerings for women who want a bolder, more high style look with modern colors like espresso, port and plume. I was surprised to find the interview suit of my dreams on their website; a suit that would get my narrow little foot in the door of More magazine as a contributing editor. (Ok, so I daydream a lot.) The jacket is black and gray herringbone tweed with an oversized notch lapel that would showcase a graceful neck and beautiful face, and a nipped-in waist with a peplum hem. It is paired with a matching pencil skirt. They also carry the perfect platform pump to wear with the suit.

The website boasts a collection of LBDs in various styles -- sleeveless, strapless, sweater -- all sexy and slim to the body. I found a lipstick red puffer jacket that is perfect for nights out that definitely raises one's fierce quotient. The coolest thing that I found on their website is a black pencil skirt adorned in a cascade of black grosgrain ribbon ruffles. Ann Taylor? It looks more like Jason Wu.

They're getting there. Shoe booties. Boyfriend jackets. Stilettos. Ruffled cardigans. Nice stuff! Many of these items are now closet staples for the average fashionista. Ann's prices are moderate for some, pricey for others. But window/website shopping is free, and now that they have my attention, they'll see me at "clearance" time.

The Eyes Have It

I dipped my toe into the eyeliner river a couple of months ago - it seemed like to right thing to do. I wanted to jazz up my look and accentuate a positive feature. Over the years I had tried lots of powders and pencils to give my eyes depth and pump up the lashes. Powders disappeared after 30 minutes; pencils ended up caked in the crease of my eyelid or a smudge on a tissue. Most recently I used L’Oreal’s HIP (high intensity pigmented) liner pencils which hung tough for about four hours then evaporated.

I have oily skin and limited time and patience. I was about to give up on smoky come-hither eyes when I heard about Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner. Bobbi Brown lipstick is almost always in my make-up bag and I love her color palette. The cosmetics are expensive, but I was willing to give the eyeliner a go.

I popped into Macy's, and at the Bobbi Brown counter I found some of prettiest colors I’ve ever seen for eyes; most of them are beautiful on darker skin tones! I bought caviar ink, a deep black/brown, but I also recommend jet black, indigo ink, granite ink, and black plum ink. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth bringing lunch from home for couple of days.

Here’s what’s fabulous about it – it lasts through a sweaty two-hour workout. It’s water-resistant and grease-resistant. It’s easy and quick to apply with the right brush. Now, here’s the key – don’t spend $25 for their ultra fine brush. Go to the drugstore and get a brush for $5. I recommend Sonia Kashuk for Target’s angled eye shadow brush.

Get the right tools, get the right look.

Marvelous Every Day

I have marvelous friends. I’m lucky to be surrounded by super smart, kind, funny women who are living their lives unapologetically. They are accomplished artists, philanthropists, communicators. They have rolled up their sleeves and plunged into community work. They are committed to family and personal connections that keep them grounded and whole. The best part is that they are one hell of a lot fun to hang out with.

However, this group of fierce, fabulous women have one fatal flaw -- they don’t see themselves as the fashionistas that they truly are. These women are bad! They have class, soul, style! They are self-assured, colorful, classy. They are sporting great haircuts with fresh, sexy color. They are draped in colorful scarves, unique ethnic pieces curated from their travels. Pieces that ensnare me like a butterfly net. They rock waterfalls of necklaces and spirals of bracelets, making statements in silver and gold, turquoise, amethyst, opal.

They represent a rainbow. I see gorgeous ebony faces framed by silver halos showing how bohemian chic is supposed to be worn. I see vivacious, statuesque blonds with attitude wearing well-loved pieces that prove that what’s on the outside is as important as what’s on the inside. These ladies are never inappropriate, never boring, never stuffy.

My sisters! Embrace your fabulousness -- unleash it to the world! Let it inhale your vibrancy, your perennial chic. You are the bright lights in my life, and it’s time to shine a little brighter -- to yourselves. A couple of days ago my friend Lynda said, "I have to look marvelous every day." And she does. So do you.

Plenty at Daffy's

Fans of designer Tracy Reese should extend their lunch hour tomorrow and head to Daffy's at 17th & Chestnut. The building's fifth floor has a stash of items from her Plenty line for consideration. These are vintage-inspired classic pieces in deep shades such as peacock and sapphire. There are workplace-friendly black velvet pants, cropped jackets with jeweled closures - stuff that looks great and will keep you cozy on chilly fall mornings. Can't say I didn't tell you!

Seasonings: A Taste of What’s Hot for Fall

Boots - Love the rounded toe and stockier high heel - more comfortable and walkable than the pointed toe and railroad spike heels of the more recent collections. Ankle boots are hot, with the slouchy look a favored variation. The over-the-knee boot is the most sizzling look for the season. It can be worn over skinny jeans, with leggings, minis, tights and tunics. It’s pretty damn sexy, but if you’re not ready to commit to the look, the classic knee high boot is a sure bet. (Style tip: if you’re still wearing scuffed boots from the 1990s with a 2” broad chunky heel, toss those babies out immediately.)

Women’s Wing Tips - Although they remind me of the shoes that nuns wore, I love the practicality of these sexy mid- and high heel oxfords. They are available everywhere in suede, tweed, and patent leather and in lush nature colors such as deep berry, black cat, mud, forest green. My fantasy pair would be from the perennially unaffordable shoemaker Robert Clergerie. I’ve seen his low heel oxford in hot pink and in silver metallic. Naturalizer has styles in a wide range of sizes all under $100.

Cardigans - Longer lengths in cashmere, cotton, mohair, lambswool, merino, acrylic. Shades from sky to earth, as well a few unnatural shades that will appeal to those who are looking to the eighties for inspiration. Wear them long and body hugging. Belt them to show off your waistline. Cardigans can be found everywhere, from Old Navy to H&M to J. Crew to Bloomingdale’s and all over the on-line shopping websites (one of my favorites is BodenUSA).

Tights - Tights with boots. Tights with high heeled oxfords. Tights with ballet flats and slinky little tunics. Tights with floral print dresses. Tights with peep toe platforms. Lacy tights, plaid tights, bohemian black tights. They’re everywhere, get a pair! Tights are far less worrisome than pantyhose and are warmer and chicer. Don’t bother with department stores; the best deals on tights are at TJ Maxx and Daffy’s.

The Boyfriend Jacket - Just another term for a more flattering length and fit. It is a distant relative of the oversized 80s linebacker jackets that I referenced in my October 2 post. The shoulder is built up a bit, but the jacket is shaped to fit a woman’s smaller frame and the hem hits at the lower hip. It’s a more forgiving fit than the shrunken jackets of past seasons, and will allow for more comfortable layering.

Gray - I love color, especially on the walls of my home and the art that adorns them, but I'm loving gray this season. It was the color for fall in Paris and two of the four clothing items that I bought there were in shades of gray. Slate, silver, kitten, pearl, pewter -- I love them all. Every shade is sophisticated and soft. There are shades of gray to flatter every skin tone, and it's a great backdrop for lively punches of color. Try a pearl gray sweater with a hot pink pencil skirt, or a slate gray knee length sweater coat over a blue or green flouncy floral print dress and boots.

Playing Catch Up

Our top style story in today’s NY Times is that Eileen Fisher, the clothing line for mid-life women looking to blend into the woodwork, is seeking a younger, more fashionable customer. If you’re not familiar, Eileen Fisher is a line of loose, uninspiring layers in muted colors. Her clothing line is like chamomile tea. Calm, comforting, no zing, no spice.

Traditionally, her line has not celebrated the female form. It wouldn’t get you second glances as you sashayed along the boulevard. Many of her items reminded me of the wardrobe that Bea Arthur’s character, Maude, wore in the celebrated 1970s sitcom. Eileen Fisher didn't get the younger designers. Eileen Fisher was not sexy.

Well, it appears that Ms. Fisher may be looking for somebody like me now. I’m a fashionable mid-life woman who wants clothing that celebrates her form. I want to show off my waistline and well-toned calves. I’m not afraid of leggings and I wear knit dresses. I’ve given away or shortened my mid-calf length dresses and skirts. My blouses and jackets are fitted.

Her plan is to give her line “stronger attitude.” Thrift stores, resale shops and other discounters give me the opportunity to craft my own look and slip into my attitude-of-the-day. Maybe she can offer some alternatives. Or can she?

I checked out her prices in the latest Garnet Hill catalog. Her new knee-length wool scoop-neck dress sells for $218. The model also sported leggings that go for $88. Her multi-fiber body conscious long cardigan goes for $198. Three weeks ago I bought two pair of winter-weight leggings from Express for $34. Last week Daffy’s had knee length wool dresses in scrumptious colors for $60. You can see where I’m going with this. If Eileen Fisher wants the average mid-life woman as a customer in this economy, she’s got to make us feel as if we’re getting a serious bargain for some serious style.

Young designers seem to be infatuated with everything 80s, but have we forgotten how much bad fashion there was? Remember the linebacker shoulder pads (HUT! HUT!), neon-colored makeup, front pleated jeans? Do you really want to wear that stuff again? Didn’t we see enough bare shoulders inspired by Flashdance (although we couldn’t leap as high as Jennifer Beals’s prancing dance double); sequined biker jackets inspired by Michael Jackson; underwear as outerwear; and the Dandy looks sported by Prince during his purple reign?

Did you have an asymmetrical haircut, Jeri Curl or frizzy perm? An asymmetrical Jeri Curl? Crimped hair? Bigger hair than the Afros of the 70s? Do you want to wear those hairstyles again? How many curl-activated-soaked collars are you willing to tolerate?

I tried to stick to time-tested pieces during the Reagan era: straight-legged Lee jeans with gem colored blouses or men’s white dress shirts, t-shirts that trumpeted my favorite radio station or rock group. Knit dresses. Levis jean jackets. White Keds. Sweatshirts with short skirts and tights in primary colors. However, I did give in to tight purple jeans, bright red high tops, skinny ties and leggings as trousers. LOVED leggings – still do. I don’t wear them as trousers now; they are layered under a tunic or floaty dress.

There were a few other bright spots – the oversized thrift store tweed jackets and coats that I wore with a Denise Huxtable attitude over baggy layers. In addition to the tweeds I also wore a Ricky Ricardo style black tuxedo jacket in over-air-conditioned offices.

Although I watched Miami Vice religiously, I could not take pastel tuxedos seriously. I went to lots of weddings in the 80s that featured groomsmen in lavender penguin suits – some with no socks. Sucked the elegance right out of the event.

And Dynasty suits! I couldn’t figure out which was worse – scores of corporate women dressed in conservative navy blue suits and blouses with bows around their necks or receptionists in full out Alexis Carrington regalia. Did you wear a melon-colored suit with avenue sized shoulder pads to your first office job?

Here’s my advice: if you were in high school, college, or the workplace in the 1980s, step away from the herd. We wore it once -- often disastrously. Let those who wore born in the 1980s and 1990s raid our closets and Goodwill for authentic acid-washed jeans, Members Only jackets, and Flava Flav clock medallions. The rest of us should stick to the classics.
